Because the municipalities were sometimes in con- flict, the of Manitoba set up a Metropolitan Corporation to plans of the various Government take over those services in which co- ordination seemed most ne While many citizens feared that an- other government on top of all the necessary. others might mean just too much in the way of taxes, there wis oo gen- with the idea and give Metro a chance, Today it. is difficult not to sides in the great debate about Metro. eral tendency to go along take CMany ave up in_arms against it, but it also has firm supporters who feel it has done fairly well and that mis- takes were only to be expected. The loudest complaint, and perhaps the most valid one, is that Metro has tried to go too far too fast. In any case, criticism has mounted over the past few weeks. Oddly ¢nough, the greatest criticism of Metro has arisen not from things which it has done but merely from things it is said to be planning. "First came the widespread rumour that Metro was going to ask for af tax of ten dollars on every automo- bile. Naturally -those people who findihg it hard to meet maintenance costs, looked on that tax as the straw that would break their backs Then came the news that a Metro planning committee wanted to take down all the projecting signs on Win- _nipeg streets. This plan would hit almost every merchant in the Metro area, as well as the sign companies, their employees and suppliers. Tt might not bother the big department stores, which are easily found or identified, but it would be a terrific blow to\the small side-street estab- lishments® The sign industry complained that Metro wanted to make Winnipeg into a quiet town instead of the busiest, brightest city of the great Midwest. Many Metro councillors declared that nothing had been done, that every- body was getting excited prematurely. The fact is, however, that Metro, in the long run, may be destroyed not on the big, important issues, or on what it actually does but on the things | it scems to threaten to do. Citizens will often face up to unpleasant facts; but they cannot stand endless uncer- tainty and rumours. hr ma mn gn hn 3m emt an An wr fn FORMER DETROIT PRO.
