St. John's Ladies Aid The first meeting of the new year 1963 was held in the church school- room on Tuesday, Jan. 8th at 4 p.m. immediately following the W.M.S. gathering. The President, Mrs. Nelson Wil- liams opened with a New Year's Re- cipe for Happiness. After the opening hymn, the Secrip- ture was read by Mrs. B. D. Arm- strong from John 4:1-30, followed by prayer by Mrs. Buntain, Minutes and treasurer's detailed yearly financial report were well re- ceived. Our efficient treasurer Mrs. H. Carnegie assured us of a splendid balance to begin the new year. Letters were read from Mrs. Wil- kinson, Mis. Espic, Sr. and Mr. W, Causley thanking the church for kind Christmas remembrances. The secretary, Mrs. C. A Christmas letter was read from Miss Ruby Wilson, 8 Mis- sionary in Africa. Ruby has made many friends in this community and it is always pleasing to hear of the wonderful work that is being done among the natives. The highlight of the evening was a presentation address, read by Mrs. Durham, to our retiring president, Tot Holtby. I quote: "We feel that your many years as President of the U.C.W., even when at times it must have been a burden, | should not go by without showing our appreciation. You never spared either your time or energy, whether it be a cleaning bee or any other faze of the work. On behalf of your fellow mem- bers we would like you to accept this gift, with the hope that you will en- joy receiving it as much as we enjoy giving it". At this time, Tot was presented with a white leather Bible, after which, she expressed her thanks. Jean Holtby conducted a guessing contest- on New Year's resolutions, the winner being Margaret Holtby. The hostess assisted by Mae Smith. erman, Jean Holtby and Mrs. Dear- born served a lovely lunch. Mr. and Mrs. Whitney Durham spent the holidays with their daugh- ter, Mrs. Gordon Maas and family of Hamilton. Mr. and Mrs. Clare Vernon and fa- mily entertained the Vernon Clan one evening recently.
