Middleton family suffered no more than heavy smoke from the chimmney fire on Friday afternoon. Many people from the Island enjoy- ed and appreciated the evening of cuchre at the home of Mr, and Mis, Cliff Love. Proceeds were used in aid of the Lodge, Representatives from the Island U.C.W. groups who attended the Osh- awa Presbyterial Annual meeting in Bowmanville on Tuesday of last week included Mrs. Thomas, Mrs, Gilbert, Mrs. E. Prentice and Mrs. Cawker from "Grace", Mrs. D. Gerrow, Mrs, J. Manns, Mrs. N. Reader and Mrs, E. Reader from the "Head". They reported a splendid turn out and a profitable program. They particu- larly enjoyed the address of the Rev. W. Tonge, a missionary from Hong Kong who was very enthusiastic and had a wide knowledge of his subject, which included the Christian Church in Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and Communist China, The Manns families of the Island enjoyed being present at the Wed- ding reception in Blackstock on Satur- day in honour of their nephew, Mur- ray Birkett of Raglan, and hig bride of Blackstock, Prospect (Crowded out last week) Mis. Frank Vernon entertained the U.C.W. at her Thursday evening, February 14th. The devotional program, convened by Janet Vernon, opened with the motto, prayer and Hymn 488. For the lesson thoughts, Lucille Gray. gave a very appropriate entitled, "Love Keeps You". Hymn 311 was sung, closing with prayer by Janet Vernon, home on reading, The president, Lucille Gray, occu pied the chair and extended a warm welcome to the visitors. Roll call was answered with a Valentine for your mystery sister. The cards werg placed in a beautifully decorated box and distributed during the social hour. A "thank you" card was received from George Smith, who is ill with glandu- lar fever. Oshawa Alderman Nor- man Down, suggested as a candidate, refused to let hi: name stand but pledged full support for Mr, Walker. Mr. Walker was brought to Canada from London, England, by his par- ents when he was four years old and has been a resident of the area ever since.
