The proposal met with such strong sup- port that. in 1899 the first Empire Day was observed in the classrooms fore Victoria Day, Thus, there arose two special days, one a school day and the other a statutory holiday. - Historical evolution from Empire to Commonwealth has gradually al-: tered, in some parts of Canada, the ! name of the school observance from | , Empire Day to Commonweplth Day. Practice in this regard, however, has varied from Province to Province. Officially Commonwealth Day is the last school day before Victoria Day. A changed viewpoint in connection with the Empire has been admirably expressed by Queen Elizabeth II: "The Commonwealth bears no re- semblance to the empires of the past. It is an entirely new conception built in the highest qualities of the spirit of man: friendship, loyalty and the "desire for freedom and peace." It is well for Canadians to remem- ber that the Commonwealth at pre- sent includes sixteen member nations and the many dependencies of mem- ber nations. The Commonwealth is a free partnership of nations whose peoples differ in race, religion and tradition. These are all nations ear- , nestly attempting to solve their prob- "lems through tolerance and mutual understanding. | Catholic | Women's League The 1963 Catholic Adoption cam- | paign was officially launched in Ont- ario County South on Sunday, April 28 when the Regional Council of the | Catholic Women's League held their annual meeting in St, John the Evan- | gelist parish hall, Whitby. 2 | "Inaugurated by the Provincial i Council of the CWL, the Adoption | campaign has been endorsed by Prime | Minister Hon. John Robarts, Hon. | Louis P. Cecile, Minister of Public Welfare, and the Catholic Bishops of | Ontario. I The Bishop's representative, Rt. Rev. P. M. Dwyer, D.P., V.F., in lend- ing his wholehearted support, said "clean clothes and three meals are not enough! Children need love and affection." Mrs.. K.
