MINERVA MAUD COWAN The death of Minerva Maud Cowan occured in Hospital at Saskatoon on May 26th, 1963. Mrs. Cowan was born in Cartwright Twp. 79 years ago and spent her early life here. She was the youngest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Marlow Sr. She had been a resident of Saskatoon for 46 years and was predeceased by her husband Dr. E. B. Cowan and one daughter Ruth, and is survived by three sons, Lyle of Saskatoon, Jack of White Rock, B.C. and Ross of New Providence, NJ. Mrs, Cowan was a member of Knox United Church and an active worker in the Hugh Cains Chapter of the 1.0.D.E., also Friend- ship Club and 0.N.O. Bridge Club and served as organist in these societies. The funeral was from the chapel of McKagues Funeral Parlor and was conducted by Rev. Benson Summers. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery Saskatoon. Obituary- HUGH LUCAS WRIGHT Mr. Hugh Lucas Wright passed away suddenly on May 17th at his home in Port Perry, Mr. Wright was born in 1892 in Brock Township near Sunderland. He was the youngest son of the late Emmanuel and Elizabeth Wright. At the age of 6 hé moved with his par- ents to Port Perry where he obtained his education, Later he moved to Toronto with his mother and there he eventually entered the barbering pro- fession. He spent some fifty years in this profession, all in the Toronto area, One of his employees had worked for him for 28 years, and some customers were the third gen. eration of the family who had gone to him regularly, He retired in the fall of 1962, due to ill health. In 1917 Mr. Wright married Mar- jorie Irene Reesor and the family consisted of 2 sons and a daughter. In 1948 his wife passed away follow- ing a lengthy illness. He later mar- ried Mrs. Louellan Cooke of Port Perry. He is survived by a son, Robert, and a daughter, Mary and fourteen grand- children and alsothis widow. Blackstock W. I. There was an excellent attendance at the Women's Institute Variety night in the Recreation Centre Fri- day night with the W.I. president Mrs. C. Smith as M.C. The evening entertainment opened with O Canada, followed by a lovely dance number by Candy Malcolm and Adele Page; Mrs. Ivan Thompson the qualifications needed by Guides earning their Gold Cords. One of the requirements is an essay on some Country, other than their own. Linda Kyte gave her essay on Guernsey where Linda has a pen pal. With Mrs. Dalton as manager and Mrs. Gilbert -Marlow-as commentator, Gr. 9 presented the Fashion Show of dresses they had made at the Home Economies class, * Mitze Malcolm and Pamela Stinson entertained with a lovely dance number.! 'Janice .Byers, | another Guide trying for her Gold Cord gave her essay on Australia, Mrs. McArthur judged the essays and the older members of the Home Ee. class presented a showing of their dresses. All girls have done excellent work and much credit is due them and their teacher Mrs. Brown of Clark School where the girls go by bus once a week. Mrs, Dalton Dorrell intro- duced Mrs, Brown who spoke briefly. Mrs. Smith expressed the thanks of the gathering to all who had contri- buted to such a fine program. The four Yelverton girls did another fine dance number. The singing of the "Queen" closed this part of the even- ing's entertainment. The sale of home cooking, sewing, etc, and lunch followed, Janice Dor- rell made the draw for the Quilt which was won by Mrs, Richard Wall. Mrs. Ernest Swain, won the place mats and Mr. Harvey Hall, Port Perry won the African Violet, Nad i HELP YOUR RED CROSS On Wednesday evening several Head Community neighbours and friends gathered at the home of Mr, and Mrs. Hubert Schillings. After several games of euchre, Myrtle Manns read the following address :(-- To Mr. and Mrs. H. Schillings and family. For-some time we have known that you were intending to move 80 now that the time for your departure is drawing near, we, your friends and neignbours have assembled to spend the evening with you betore you leave our community. We could not let this occasion pass without "showing our appreciation of yoy both as neighbours, Lr We can scarcely realize that almost eleven years have elapsed since you came to nve in our midst. During those years, we have always known that we could count on your support in any undertaking and that you would lend a helping hand to a friend or neighbour in need. Your home was always a welcome place to ask for aid. You will always have many memories of Scugog to cherish, It was on this island all of your iamily were born and here they spent their early years which they will always remember, especially the older children. These years are the most impressionable years of one's life. You have had varied experiences, some of them happy, some full of sorrow. pleasure and sorrow you have re- mained true to the hignest ideals. You have been diligent and successful in your enterprises here and we hope success will follow you in the future.
