_ _™ od RT i y 'Pickering, the Fo a A, HA 'Adoption Of Children On Increase 99 Applicants On Waiting List The regular monthly meeting of the Board of Directors of the Children's Aid Society of the County of Ontario and the City of Oshawa was held on Thursday evening, January 9th, 1964. In the absence of the President, Cyril Morley of meeting was chaired by Harold Brain of Oshawa, Vice-President. The Directors decided that the Annual Meeting of the So- ciety would be held on April 28rd, 1964 and the Public Rela- tions Committee would be ask- ed to plan the programme and place of the Meeting. The Local Director, Mr. Lewis reported that on December 31st, 1963 the Society had 358 child- ren in care. Of these, there were 190 in boarding homes, 40 in free homes, 118 on adoption probation and 5 in institutions. In addition the Society was ser- ving 97 families with 389 child- ren with the children remaining in their own homes. At the year's end 131 unmar- ried mothers and 59 putative fathers were given help. During the month 16 adop- tions were completed, 5 divorce reports filed, 3 court actions undertaken for affiliation or- ders and court hearings attend- ed in regard to 15 families in- volving 33 children. The Directors passed accounts totalling $2,622.42 for the month of December and approy- ed the financial statement as presented by the Treasurer, Mr. Ken Purdy. The Local Director presented a breakdown of unmarried mo- ther statistics comparing 1962 to 1963 for this Society as follows, 1962 shown in brackets. Hosp. patients, counter clerks, hairdressers, etc) 46 (38) |g 118 (112) Statistics for the adoption work of the Society were also PORT PERRY STAR, made available to the Directors. These showed an increase of children placed for adoption from 78 in 1962 to 94 in 1963, an increase of 21%. The So- ciety also experienced an in- crease in applications from couples interested in adoption. In 1962 there were 95 applica- tions and in 1963, 128 applica- tions, an increase of 35%. At the end of 1963 there were 99 couples waiting to be given consideration as adoption appli- cants whereas at the end of 1962 there were only 77, showing an increase again of 29%. The Local Director pointed out that the Society's adoption staff was finding it difficult to keep up with this increase in their work and before long consideration should be given to increasing the adoption staff.
