Smith, deacon, in his "History of the Port Perry Baptist Church" said that he had been unable to -locate any actual records dating further back than 1947, However, he had spoKen to a number of the original members of the church and been able to piece together a picture of what had happen- ed -up through the years. At the turn of the century, Mr. Smith said, the Convention Baptists had a church situated on the very same spot as the new church was built, During the first part of the century interest in the church seemed to decline and services mainly were conducted by stu- " dent pastors who came out from Toronto on Sundays. At this particular time the Sunday - School portion of the church was used by the High School for household science classes. The building was later purchased by the Port Perry Fair Board, moved to the fair grounds where it still is being used as 'an exhibit hall. For 'several years there was very few or no worship services among the Baptist congregation in Port Perry. Under the sponsorship of Calvary Baptist Church in Osh- awa a revival of the denomina- tion took place in 1937-38. Mr, Clem Wright with the assistance of their pastor Rev. Glen War- dell conducted services: in a large tent on the waterfront near the location where the J. Orde Marine is now located. ~ This was the beginning of a new era for the Baptist Church in. Port Perry. When it was too cold to hold tent meetings, the congregation first met in ~Napier's Restaurant and later moved to a room over the Har- ness 'Shon which was in the vi- cinity of where Dowson's Red -& Write store is now located. Several ministers were Seon above is a section of the interior of the new Baptist Church in Port Perry. At the pulpit is the guest speaker, Rev. M. H. Butler, London, Ontarle 'had been made, and it was de- 1n charge of the congregation for . for. brief periods after Mr. left Port Perry for Toronto. In 1945 a building was erect- ed on the same site as the pre-' sent church-is located. Here the congregation seem to thrive under the leadership of Brother Taylor who was succeeded by! Mr, Sloan in 1953. Meetings were held in the afternoon since Mr. Sloan also had the Little. Britain charge. From May 1954 until Nov. ! 1955 Mr. David J.- Toews had the pastoral charge. During | his period the church became associated with the Fellowship of Evangelical Baptist Churches in Canada. Mr. Paul Delaney became pas- tor in 1956, and during his term a parsonage was built on a lot on Crandel Street, presented to the church by Mr. Wm. Starr. Rev. Stuart Mulligan succeed- ed Mr. Delaney in December, 1959 while a student at C.B.S. and in November 1961 the pre- sent pastor Mr. J."H. Brown took over the charge, Mr. Brown, realizing the need and the importance of a new church ~ building, immediately began working toward this goal. His congregation was behind "kim; and mow after only three]. years what. once was only a dream has become a reality. All Port Perry may well be proud of the fine, new edifice |- in their village. Mr. Bruce Crowder, a mem- ber of the building committee told 'the congregation of the planning stages and the con- struction of the church, At a meeting in July 1963 the decision of building a church cided that the cost would have Wright to stay within $15,000. The parsonage was sold to. thé price of $6,600 which gave | the building committee the ini- tial capital.
