Harrison, Editor, Port Perry Star, Port Perry, Ont. Dear Sir: "A newspaper is the mirror of the community it serves, It reflects the good and the bad. In short, it can only report the news; it cannot create _ the news." The statement is taken from the Star of April 16th. As a member of this commun- ity, I would like to tell you that the article called "Sugar and Spice" of last week did not mir- ror my little corner of the com- munity. It was a shameful ex- pression of the meaning of Sunday to this shameless gen- eration. The writer is correct in saying tHat Sunday is just a part of the week-end today. But we ought not to say such things boastfully; it is to our shame that such has become the ac- cepted practice. Surely our forefathers would turn over in their graves if they could be- hold us on the Lord's Day--to say nothing of the grief that our Risen Lord must feel. The author, Bill Smiley, is obviously caught up with the secular spirit of 1964. He speaks of the Old Testament Sabbath apart from religious signifi. cance "When the Sabbath came along, all he (ancient Hebrew) had to do was lie round and count his sheep". By that, Mr. Smiley shows his ignorance of the Old Testament. He goes on to speak of Sunday as a day for men to drive their families to church, to wash the car, to catch fish, or to play golf, or to visit distant relatives. By this, he shows, his ignorance of the New Testament and the meaning of Sunday. I am not sure how the writer could be so bold to state that when he awoke in a dismal mood he was cheered up by thinking about what Sunday really meant--he obviously has no idea of what Sunday really means. To him, Sunday means church, which is good, because it provides employment for ministers and an opportunity for rusty warblers to exercise their vocal cords. Are we altogether sure that man is climbing up- ward? It appears to me that we've slipped a long way. Mr. Smiley will probably be found to express the sentiments of many though. people in Port Perry were to at- tend church, we'd not have room in our auditoriums. In fact, I think our buildings have room to accomodate about 1% of the people of the village, without mentioning those of the sur- rounding district. - Strange is- n't it that people know where to run when someone is dis- turbed, sick, dying, or in need of an official for a wedding or funeral. What gross hypocrisy. It appears the greatest hypo- crites might not be found with- in the church. I raisé my voice because 1 don't want to be included among those that harbour such an in- terpretation of Sunday. To me, Sunday is the day when Chris- tians gather to celebrate tha resurrection of Jesus Christ and I hope the Star will use a little discretion before it prints such a vulgar appraisal of a day that still has religious :signi- ficance to many of Ws. Yours very sincerely, : John H. Brown If all the to study His Word, the Bible.
