McCartney attend- ed the funeral of her aunt at New Liskeard on Saturday. Catholic Women's League| More than 500 delegates and members converged on the Roy- al York Hotel in Toronto on Thursday, May 14th for the 44th Annual Convention of the Catholic Women's League. the theme of this year's convention was "For God and Canada--A Modern Lay Apostolate." Registration began at 9 am. opened with Mrs. -D. Donovan presiding.. The Rev. G, B Breen, Spiritual Director, led the open- ing prayers. To save time the minutes of the last Archdioces- an Convention and the report on the Pre-Convention meeting Dobell, 2nd Vice President of the Ontario Provincial Council brought greetings from the Pro- vinces and warm good wishes from President Mrs. Clifford Noble. After a brief adjournment for | coffee break, the meeting re- convened for a Spiritual Work- shop organised by Mrs, J. C. Farragher... Mrs. troduced the guest speaker, Rev. N. J. Gignac, Director of Ont. County Regional and Pastor of St. Mary of the People Church Father Gignac's topic was "The Role of Women in the Lay Apostolate" and he began by deploring the wide- spread degration and abuse of sex, Pornographical literature Donovan in-| - Cinema portray blatant sex; di- vorce and adultery are on the increase. Rasenberger presented various methods of finding solutions to several problems, Luncheon was held in the beautiful Canadian Room and His Grace, Archbishop Pocock ¢ was the Guest of honour. In his address he stressed the motherly role of women in so- ciety--her ability to leaven the heartlessness of the modern world with compassionate love and tenderness. Following the luncheon winners of the Child- ren's Oratorical Contest, Miss Petra Bierkardt and Master Paul Malo, delivered their speeches with great self-posses- sion and excellent elocution. Various resolutions were then submitted by Mrs, J. J. Sullivan all of which were carried and HA A 0, the new slate of officers were installed by Father Breen. Mrs. Donovan presented a cheque and spiritual bouquet to Father Breen in appreciation of his services as Director. Father Breen thanked mem- bers for their gift and urged them to go forth into the world re-dedicated to the cause of Christ. He stressed the vital need to preserve spiritual val- ues in a materialistic and plura- listic society. He gave his blessing upon the assembly and the Convention was adjourned. Feature! - Save 4c!
