"The life you save could be your own." HEALTH MINISTER M. B. Infant Mortality Health Minister M. B. Dy- mond recently suggested a new responsibility for members of the Ontario Public Health As- sociation -- particularly public health nurses. "There are still too many in- stances of children being beaten by adults," he said, "While this is not directly your res- ponsibility, I -think you might well be the first people to de- DYMOND Rate Too High tect the possibility and move to present such actions." Although Ontario is proud of its public health services, said Dr. Dymond, the province is ex- celled in one respect by 10 coun- tries: infant mortality. The Netherlands have an in- fant mortality rate of 15.8 per 100,000 population; the Ontario rate is 28, the national rate 27.6. In maternal deaths, said Dr. Dy- mond, the Ontario rate is .8 per 1,000 births; the Northern Ire- land rate is .2. Further, he found there had been little reduction in the four major causes of infant deaths (prematurity, accidents, Rh in- compatibility, injury at birth) in the delivery of babies during the past 20 years. Initially, his department was established to combat epidemics which threatened the small po- pulation of a new province, said Dr, Dymond. The typhoid out- break at Aberdeen (his birth. place) showed this service is still needed. ® Your Xmas Turkey FREE!] Yes . . . it is possible to get Absolutely FREE your TURKEY FOR KAMAS.
