N Wi : iy : a TY SILER AE TRAN, PART FR EREN NANTY Nov. 10, 1964 The Department of Agricul- ture issued a release on a sub- ject which they termed "Hog Outlook". Since there are a large number of hog producers in Ontario County, I felt that some of this news release would be of interest to them, The Department predicts heavier hog marketings and somewhat lower prices to pro- ducers, compared with last year, for the final quarter of 1964. Marketings should reach their highest levels in late October and November, but decline somewhat in December. Prices are expected to remain close to present levels. According to the D.B.S. of September 1st, there were 6, 900,000 hogs on farms in Can- ada, an increase of six percent . over last year. In Eastern Canada hog num- bers increased two percent, REPORT FROM PARLIAMENT By Michael Starr, M.P. while numbers in Western Can- ada were twelve percent greater than a year ago. Hog marketings are expected to total 1,859,000 head in the final quarter of 1964. This is a five percent increase over the final three months of 1968, and the greatest quantity marketed in this quarter since 1959. In the first quarter of 1965, it is predicted that marketing may increase four percent over the previous year. Prices should be only slightly lower than during the present fall but somewhat below last year in January, February & March. The Canadian Federation of Agriculture announced recently that, effective, September 1st, Canada now has a new set of feedfreight assistance regula- first announced. The initial plans of the Gov ernment contained a number of very serious deficiencies and inequities which have now been corrected. The new system will effectively introduce the coms- petition of truck rates into local feed shipments everywhere in Eastern Canada, where such competition was prevented by requirements that assisted feed be shipped by rail. The im- provement has now been made without, as it seemed initially would be the case, seriously hurting the position of many farmers, under the policy. The position of a good many points has been improved. One of the effects of the new regulations is that all areas in Eastern Canada are now zoned. Rates of assistance established for the zones are on a flat rate basis, by whatever combination of water, rail or truck move- ment the grain comes. The adoption of a permanent policy on this matter must await the report of the Agri-|" culture House Committee on feed grain price differentials.
