14 -- PORT PERRY STAR, THURS., NOVEMBER 26th, 1964 | AS THE READER SEES IT | The Editor, Port Perry Star Port Perry, Ont. Dear Sir: It would be an excellent ser- vice if your paper would pub- lish a word to the parents of Port Perry children about the snowball throwing that is go- ing on at this time, both to and from school. A near accident occurred on Tuesday of this week between Noon and 12:20 when two or three boys were pitching snow- balls at passing cars. The usual practice is to throw them at friends on the opposite side of the road, but on Tuesday there were no targets except passing cars. One snowball happened to land smack on the window of the driver's side of a car going up the hill on Queen St. If the window had been lowered, the man driving the car would have received the full force of the packed snow right in his face, As it was, he jammed ow his brakes and open- ed the car door (apparently with the idea of getting out and chastising the boys). Had a car been travelling in the op- posite direction, a 3-car smash- up could have resulted. As it was, tthe driver of the car im- mediately behind had quite a job avoiding hitting both the car and the man as he got out 'of his automobile. This is true, because I happened to be the driver in the following car. The teachers and Principal at Port Perry Public School cannot be expected to super- vise children's street activities. They are responsible for the conduct and behaviour of stu- dents only while on school pro- perty. Surely parents will see the po- tential dangers involved in this "boyish" fun and point out to them the possibility of car ac. cidents due to their playful pastimes.
