PERCE FIN S Fa RRR AAT TV ah SNR Ontario County Inspectorate Hold Annual Convention In Toronto No. 1 Teachers' Institute con- vention was held this year at the Univresity of Toronto, on Friday, October 80. This day of Professional Development was arranged by our inspector, Miss L. McNeill, B.A.B.Paed, with inspectors of two other areas. The morning session conven- ed at 10 am, in Convocation Hall and was presided over by Professor V. W. Bladen, Facul- ty of Arts and Sciences. In his remarks Professor Bladen plac- ed emphasis on development of mind rather than formal train- ing alone. "What matters," he said, "is to be intellectually a- live with senses alert. A Buro- pean tour may be more valu- able than a university course. The ability to influence child- ren in the right way is of prim- ary importance." Excellent suggestions were brought out by Dr, C. T. Bissell, President, University of Tor- onto. "Importance of elementary schools must not be minimized. Here, basic concepts as formed. The teacher should be an expert in his field, Universities must take increasing responsibility for further growth in the arts and for the relief of increasing boredom in society." In con- clusion he stated that a univer sity education may be a basic requirement for the teacher of the elementary school. The main feature of the morn- ing session was a panel discus- sion, "Curriculum changes in Ontario Schools with Professor R. S. Harris, Principal, Innis College, U. of T. in the chair. Participants were Mr. H. Mit- chell, Ontario Curriculum Insti- tute; Mrs. E. ICrossberg, chair- man Forrest Hill Board of Edu- cation; Dr, K. Prueter, Superin- tendent [Public Schools, Etobi- coke Board of Education; Pro- fessor C. B. McPherson, De- partment of Political Economy, University of Toronto. The weachers were given an insight into the way a Curricu- lum Institute works. This or- ganization brings together all segments of society -- univer- sity personnel, elementary and secondary teachers, lay people and trustees for research. Their findings are submitted to the Department of Education. It is important that education be considered one unit from kinder- garten to university. Mrs. Grossberg explained that the Ontario Education Research Council is an annual forum in which people interested in edu- cation can get together and discuss curriculum, Teachers in class-room should do research on their own problems in cur- riculum. Dr. Prueter emphasized the need to study conditions under which teachers are expected to teach each pupil thoroughly. "aT A vy » Ted ME 1 » "ew Wy, TH. . PORT PERRY STAR, THURS. NOVEMBER 26th, 1964 -- 15 Teacher-pupil ratio must be adjusted. Teachers must be freed to teach. Secretarial duties must be kept to a mini- mum. Out of research come new and proven materials and tried procedures, available to the classroom. The afternoon was given over to tours of various univer- sity buildings. Also the Uni- versity arranged that Profes- sors in the Departments, de- scribed the discipline they rep- resent. These lectures, which were given in Sydney Smith Hall were both interesting and informative.
