Mara Provincial Park Ready Next Summer By the time next summer rolls around people living in the Oril- lia area and others travelling north for summer vacations will have more camping and pienicking facilities available at the new Mara Provincial Park, near Atherley, Major development work has been underway, on the proper- ty, fronting on Lake Simcoe a mile south of Highway No. 12 at Atherley, since the middle of December. Recognizing tha negd for an additional park at the: upper end of Lake Simcoe, the Government purchased ap- proximately 100 acres of land in Mara township a little over a year ago. Some preliminary wark was undertaken, early in 1984, and recently sufficient funds were made available to carry out the necessary improve- ments to 'have the park in full operation for the 19656 season, The new area should help re- lieve some of the pressure being experienced at two other near- by provincial parks operated by the Department of Lands and Forests -- Sibbald Point, near Sutton, and Bass Lake, just west of Orillia. Work, being carried out this winter, includes the construc- tion of a park office and maint- enance building, - two modern comfort stations, a number of earth pit toilets and several change houses for bathers. Several acres of low wet land, fronting on the lake, are being cleared and filled with sand to a depth of two or more feet, which will provide a good bath- ing beach, extending close to 600 feet along the shoreline. When fully developed the park will have 96 individual camp- sites and 15 trailer sites avail. able, the majority of which, De- partment staff expect, will be ready for use during 1965. Car parking areas are also being constructed to accommodate, at least, 600 cars and roads built for access to all the main use areas from the park entrance. Approximately 56 acres in the park will be set aside for pic- nicking and other day-use ac- tivities for summer visitors, During the present winter a crew of men will be improving the area, removing dead and over-mature trees and creating small openings in the wooded areas for picnic tables and sun- light. About 16 acres will be left in natural wods for trails and general wildlife habitat. Expenditures, this winter, will be in the neighborhood of $100,- 000.00. Although not expected to be completed this year the Depart- ment plans construction of a boat launching and mooring 26,000 yards of muck material will have to be removed by dredging, after clearing, to create the proposed channel from the lake, about 110 feet in width. Lorne O'Dell, Park Superin- tendent at Wasaga Beach, is in charge of the new development programme this winter. Three other Park Superintendents are assisting -- Fred Richardson, Bass Lake, William Braden, Earl Rowe and Dick Ellis, Six- mile Lake--to ensure that major improvements are completed be- fore spring arrives, A number of local men in Mara and Rama townships are being employed and bulldozers and other heavy equipment are being used for road construction and stump removal, Weather conditions, so far, have been fa- vourable and progress has been good to date. Stumps and trees have been removed on the beach and car parking areas, main / PORT PERRY STAR, Thursday, February 4th -- 15 area on the property.
