PORT PERRY STAR, I Thursday, February 4th 16 IN AND OUT OF TOWN Groundhog Day was Tuesday, February 2, the day was sunny and bright, and no doubt Mr. Groundhog saw his own shadow. According to an old super- stition this means another six long weeks of hard winter, so brace yourself. . A 'death notice carried in the Star last week concerning Mur- doch Currie of 2756 Trinity St. Toronto, should have read Van- couver, B.C.) * The Draw in aid of the Port Perry Figure Skating Club Fund was made on Tuesday last and Reeve J. J. Gibson drew the winning ticket held by Mrs. Jean Mahaffy of Blackstock. The prize was for a $50.00 bill). * ok * * » LI Church of the Ascension Even- ing Guild met in the Parish Hall on Monday, February 1. Meet- ing opened with the members' prayer. Plans were. made for a congregational get-together on Friday, February 12th. Will f the ladies who have tea towels return them as soon as possible. Watch for the next euchre night. ok x Orie of the subscribers to the Cty. Assessor Will Continue Reeve Oyler vacated the Chair and Councillor Doble acted as Chairman when Reach Township Council went into Committee as a whole for the purpose of dis- cussing County vs. Township Assessment. Much discussion ensued about inequalities of as- sessment on various properties and lots in the Township. In- stances were cited where build- ing lots were under-assessed in proportion - to their potential sales value. A recorded vote was taken, on a"motion for the Township of Reach to return to Township Assessment rather than County Assessment. This vote failed to carry--the result being 3-2. Reach Township Will Purchase Truck And Plow Superintendent T. Stevens presented the Road Report at Reach Township regular coungil | meeting Monday afternoon, and after discussion a motion was made and carried that he be instructed to prepare specifica- tions for the purchase of a new truck and snow-plow, the rear axle of which GVW to be 32,000 lbs. - Approval from the District Engineer is to be obtained to place a call for tenders for such a truck in the Oshawa Times; Port Perry Star and Uxbridge Times-Journal. While dealing with road busi- ness, Supt, Stevens asked Coun- cil for their views on adding a rust inhibitor to the sand and salt used on roads. An additive of 19% inhibitor of rust would fnerease the cost approximately $3.00 per ton of salt. Approxi- mately 50 tons of sand and salt is used yearly in Reach. It is generally believed that cars driven in areas which are free from salt and sand still rust out about 72%, which makes the sand and salt on roads responsible for about 28% of the rusting.
