By Alma Reesor Through the co-operation of the principal, Mr, Roy Cornish and his staff, the Port Perry Public School once again held a most successful ice carnival at the Community Memorial Re: creation Centre. The rink was filled to capa- city with parents and friends interested in the young folk's activities and over five hundred pupils, ranging from the five- year-olds to the teen-agers were on the ice, decked out in costumes of all hues and varie- ties imaginable. There were approximately one hundred and twenty prize winners in the costume classification and sev- enty prize winners in the races. Even though the transporta- tion and 'walking conditions were so hazardous, the finan- cial proteeds were beyond ex- pectations and over ninety dol- lars was realized and given]. back to the students in prize money. Through this generos- ity it was possible to give lar- ger prizes to the first five win- ners, and it is interestng to note that all the "wee ones" who competed were rewarded for their efforts whether they were prize winners or not. The judges were Mrs. Geo. Samells; Mrs. Cochrane; Mrs. Earl Martyn; Miss Susan Ad- derly; Miss Stanyer and Mrs. Bruce Beare. The prize awards were in charge of Mrs. Lloyd Hunter and Mrs. Elmer Lee ably recorded the events of the afternoon's activities. . The races were supervised by Mr. Sam Cawker, Mr. Stuart Lane and Mr. Robert Robert- son, With the assistance of the rest of the teachers this fifteenth annual carnival was a stupendous success. The an- neuncing was in charge of Mr. Cornish, Space does not permit detail- ed reports of the individuals, each contestant was outstand- ing--the fancy dress costumes were indeed beautiful; the com- ic numbers showed excellent ingenuity and the originals were quite artistic and some- what "out of this world". After the judging of costum- es were completed, races were held for all age groups. © The first three prize winners in the various classifications: were as follows: Kindergarten and Grade 1 Girls Comic-- Debbie Short, Shelly Howsam, Patsy Smith. Being between hills, motorists found it fairly easy to slide in, but not so easy to climb out again. Because of icy conditions the U.C.W. deemed it wise to stay at home so postponed their meeting one week. The big event of the week for Mr. and Mrs, E. Butt was the arrival of their first grand- .. son, born to Mr. and Mrs. Grant Butt, Whitby. The doting grandparents are in Whitby too at present to keep an eye on things. Last week our truckers stole the lime-light. This week it is the poisoners. Mr. G. Lloyd decided to de-louse his cattle and succeeded in poisoning himself with the chemicals in the Dri-kill powder he was us- ing. He landed in Lindsay Hospital for a 2-week stay. 'He is slowly improving. Not to be outdone Jim Cook- 'gon indulged in a hamburger at work and came down with food poisoning. Fortunately it was discovered early and he hag been discharged from hospital, While dealing with the sub- jeet of sickness, we are sorry to report that Mrs, Albert Short is again hospitalized, due no doubt at least partly, to the strains she endured during the last 2 weeks. 'Mr. Clayton Hallett has re- "turned home after undergoing surgery in Lindsay hospital, And Oh yes! Bill Wanamaker is sporting his annual "big red nose" after playing hoskey in Coboconk. To change the subject: Con- gratulations to our budding pianist Catharine Nicholls who received 1st class honours in her music examination. The young people held their annual skating party on Sat. evening, and were served lunch at the church on their return by north group ladies. On Tuesday evening Mr. and Mrs. B. Wanamaker were sup- per guests of Mr. and Mrs. BE. Dregar and F. Watson in Tor- onto. h Neil Wanamaker was S, S. Supt. this week. Robbie Abra- ham read the lesson and Mrs. Dowson contributed birthday money. Attendance was 79. Our Sunday visitors included: Mr. and Mrs. Chas, Martin, Toronto, with Mr. & Mrs. Boe.
