(Ontario Hydro Photo) New Power Line Stringing Method Used Using a new technique, 44, 000 volt power transmission lines were strung almost seven miles recently above live 8,000 volt distribution lines, from Port Perry to Blackstock, by Ont- ario Hydro line crews. " It was the first time that line tension stringing of this magnitude had ever been per- formed in Ontario Hydro's Cen- tral Region. CANNINGTON - LINDSAY PETERBOROUGH WHITBY was achieved by experienced linesmen handling unique, new line stringing and tension ma- chines, Not a single interrup- tion occurred to customer ser- vice during the entire operation which was accomplished in, less than a week. Until just recently, when the new method of line stringing was developed, service to some 1,200 customers along the seven mile sector would have been seriously interrupted by em- ploying conyentional stringing methods. Tension stringing is the new practice of stringing power line conductors without the usual sags. This is done by a powerful hydraulic machine pul- ling the electric power lines at one end and special equipment at the other end which can maintain braking or tension on the lines to prevent them sag- ging into the live (energized) lines below. The three new power line conductors were held taut sev- eral feet above the live circuits below. The 44,000 volt conduc- tors were pulled at about two miles per hour and the tension varied from 800 pounds at the start of the pull to approxim- ately 2,500 pounds at the finish. Conductor pulls vary in length on each line stringing project. The Port Perry to Blackstock undertaking was done in two sections of approximately 3% miles of pull each, making this an unusually long pull. The entire operation in the Port Perry to Blackstock sector went off well and a special at- tachment called a "traveller" aided in keeping the newly- strung lines in place. Skilled linesmen were on hand using trucks equipped with hydraulic lift buckets whenever needed to keep the traveller equipment free, The line stringing opera- tion proceeded with scarcely any hitches, being accomplished in almost record time. This re- sulted in considerable saving compared with the conventional line stringing methods. There are other economic benefits gained by using this tension stringing technique. One important benefit is the elim- ination of lengthy power inter- Successfully Port Perry To Blackstock ruptions to customers. new method also enables ont. ario Hydro to build over exist, ing lower voltage distribution lines with higher voltage trans- misison circuits without inter- ruption to obtain a single sup- port for both power lines. Adam S. Smith, Ontario Hy- dro's Central Region Manager; and other regional engineers and Line Maintenance Supervi- sors, were on hand to witness the tension line stringing car- ried out on two separate days. Mr. Smith stated that this first tension line stringing operation in Central Region was a com- plete success. S.S.
