Mr .and Mrs. David Prentice and Miss Vera Prentice and Mr. Howard Ashton enjoyed the colour tour sponsored by the senior citizens club on Monday. Mr. and Mrs, Wm. Kendry & Patty, Miss Bonnie Steward, Philip Benns were supper guests with Mr. and Mrs. Alan Card on Sunday. The Asling and Ashton fami- lies celebrated little Richard Ashton's wedding at the home of his parents Mr. and Mrs. Keith Ashton. Don't forget the church can- vass Sunday afternoon, Oct. 8. Mr, and Mrs. Earl Wilson & family were dinner guests with his parents Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Wilson on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Geer were guests on Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer | Ploughman. It was only defeated by a narrow margin -- 22 to 17 -- and supporters of the system said the motion would likely be brought up again. 3 Clifford Laycox, reeve of Pickering Township introduced the motion calling for the sett- ing up of a county assessment system under a county assess- ment commissioner. Mrs. Jean McPherson, deputy reeve of Pickering, Township, voted against the motion. Adked later why Mrs. Mec- Pherson took this action, Reeve Laycox said, "She will vote against anything that I am in favor of." REPORT ADOPTED The fifth report of the stand- ing committee on assessment & taxation, adopted by council, reported increases in the vill- ages of Beaverton, Pickering county Assessment Defeated 22 to 17 and Port Perry due to adjust- ments, Irving Boy, deputy reev® of Port Perry, a member of the committee, said: "We feel this is a step in the right direction. County assessment has to come sooner o rlater ,and the provin- sooner or later, and the provin- cial government wants it." He said provincial grants are also better under a system like this. Mr. Boyd said that the assess- ment of land and real property in Port Perry this year, com- pleted for the first time by a county assessor, was increased by more than $500,000. "And we had only 18 appeals on the assessments," he said. Ten of 18 municipalities in Ontario County are alreday as- sessed by a county assessor on a voluntary basis. There are now 18 counties in Ontario that have adopted a county assessment system, two more counties have given sec- ond readings to bylaws setting say Fair last week. PERRY 5 of the clan. up a system: -- WHITBY OPPOSED Reeve Everett Quantrill and Deputy Reeve George Brooks of the Town of Whitby, made it clear that Whitby Council wants no part of a county sys- tem. Mr. Laycox' motion said that since the main source of the tax revenue of local municipalities and the gounty levy is based on assessment of real property, it is only right that each rate- payer be only required to pay his or her just share of the tax lead. He said a county system would achieve some degree of uniformity in the assessments made in the local municipality. Mr. Laycox said the Ontario department of municipal affairs is prepared to make grants to help defray the cost of a county system. William G. Manning, clerk of Ontario County, said in an in- terview during a council recess, that a county assessment sys- tem is "the only fair way in dealing with assessment." "Two members of council were absent when the vote was taken. Fralick Family The Tenth Annual Fralick Reunion was held on Sunday, September 12, 1965 at the Port Perry Scout Hall with 60 mem- bers of the Fralick family at- tending from Whitby, Scarbor- ough, Toronto and Peterbor- ough to meet with local families Guests were also present from Windsor and Niagara Falls. During the afternoon, a lively game of baseball took place with Bill Watson's team defeat- ing Ray Fralick's team by a score of 80-20. A picnic supper followed in the hall basement where Presi- dent Douglas Maundrell of Whitby extended a welcome and expressed appreciation at seeing so many of the younger set present. The following slate of offi- cers were elected for the 1965- 1966 term: President--Mrs. Roy St. John Vice President-- Mrs. Jack B. Howey Secretary-Treasurer-- Miss Gloria Fralick Hold Reunion Social Committee--Mrs. Geo. Burnett and Mrs. Roy Kendell Sports Committee--Marilyn Fralick, Sylvia Fralick, Terry Rowland and .. David Maundrell. Mr. Clarence Fralick made the lucky draw for door prizes and these went to Mr. Ray Fralick and Master John Fulford. A special prize was presented to Mrs. Clarence Fralick as the eldest 'lady present and the youngest member was six week old Kim Heustis of Scarborough who was also presented with a gift. Following supper, Mr. Clark Ross of Scarborough presented three films which included one on "Cattle Ranching", a Com- edy and one on "Figure Skat- ing". Games were conducted for the six to sixteen year olds and prizes presented to the winners. It was decided to hold next year's Reunion at the Scout Hall on Sunday, September 11, 1966. Women's Hospital Auxiliary The first meeting of the Fall session opened with a delight- ful dessert luncheon at the home of President Mrs. M. B. Dymond. The business part of the meet- ing opened with the Lord's Prayer recited in unison, after which the minutes of the last meeting were read by Mrs. B Wanamaker. Mrs. D. Crozier gave the Treasurer's report and announ- ced a healthy bank balance of more than $1500.00. The For- feit Calendars brought in over $500. and the World Fair Draw added another $400. plus. It was announced that a cheque for $10.00 had been sent to the Cancer Society in memory of Mrs. H. Brooks in lieu of flow- ers, There is to be a regional meeting of the Hospital Auxi- liary in Lindsay on Tuesday, Oct. bth at 2 p.m. and the an- nual Convention will be held in Toronto from October 24-27th, inclusive. Mrs. Manns reported that she had given out 26 pairs of baby booties since June and had an- other 8 pairs on hand. It was decided to send thank-you let- ters to Mrs. Jessie Watson and Mrs. McMillan who have faith- fully knitted booties for many years, As the Forfeit Calendars were 80 popular it was suggested that they be tried again, possi- bly in March 1966. Mrs. Dymond is anxious too organize a Spring Fair next year and a committee volun- teered to be responsible for the allotment of work. Letters will be sent to the organizations and their views about such a project solicited, The annual Doll Festival will be held as usual and the draw will take place Saturday, Dee. 11th. There will be ten dolls this year with a prize of five dollars in cash attached to each. The next meeting will be held at the hospital on Monday, Oct. 18th.
