Under the system people here will be able to reach any one of some 95,000,000 telephones in Canada and the United States with a maximum of 11 turns of the dial. To make this pos- sible the major telephone com- panies in North America split the continent into areas, each with a distinctive code. Since no two telephones have the same number within an area, each telephone number, when linked with ts Arae Code, is unique. This makes it possible for the DDD switching equip- ment to pick out any specific telephone. As the first step. in introdue- ing DDD in the area Mr. Lowry said that beginning September 20 people in Oshawa dialing other telephones in Oshawa would have to dial the full seven digits of the number to make certain their calls go through, However, no changes in dialing will take place here in the Port Perry exchange he pointed out. DDD service is continually being added to and eventually most telephone users on the North American continent will be able to place their own long distance calls without a opera- tor's assistance. It does mot affect long distance rates and can only be used for station-to- station calls. Mr. Lowry concluded by say- ing that prior to the introduc- tion 'of DDD all customers will receive detailed information on how to place their own long distance calls.
