Ordination Service Held At St. John's Preshyterian Sunday last, January 9th, was an important day in St. John's Presbyterian Church on the oc- casion of the ordination of two new elders to the office of rul- ing elder. In the course of the morning service of. worship Messrs. George MgcPhaden and Grant C. MacDonald were sol- emnly set apart by prayer to be ruling elders of the Church, following their election by the congregation some weeks earlier. In the historic service of or- dination, the steps leading up to ordination service were narrated by the Reverend H. M. Buntain, Minister of St.John's and Mod- erator of the Session. This was followed by the prescribed questions to the elders-elect and to the congregation. Then with the other elders on either side of the elders-elect the Moderator in the Name of the Lord Jesus and by authority of the Session ordained Mr. Mac Donald and Mr. McPhaden to the honourable and responsible office. After the charges were comed them to the fellowship and work of the Session. A particularly significant phase of the service was the preaching of the sermon by the Honourable Dr. M. B. Dymond, a Ruling Elder of St.John's Church. His subject was "The Eldership" and he spoke with emphasis on the privilege, hon- our, and responsibility of the laity as represented in the eldership in sharing with the Teaching Elders, or clergy, the gadership of the people of God. He referred to the historic Pres- byterian interpretation of the nature of the Church, the theo- logical basic for it, and the practical usefulness of the same in relating the Good News of Jesus Christ to our fellowman. Re Ordination Service The ordination of Mr. Mac Donald and Mr. McPhaden brings the number of Ruling Elders in St. John's to eight. They are as follows: Mr, John Murray, Dr. M. B. Dymond, Mr. A. M. Law- rence, Mr Oliver Watson, Mr. Alex Johns, Mr, Donald Milne, Mr. George McPhaden and Mr. Grant MacDonald. Mr. Oliver Watson now resides in Tecum- seh near Windsor, Ontario. An evening service of wor- ship was also held on Sunday last in St.John's Church, it be- ing the annual 'Week of Prayer' service held interdenomination- ally each year. This year the Reverend Reginald Rose, Rector of The Church of the Ascension, assisted Mr. Buntain in the read- ing of the Responsive Psalm and in the prayers. The sermon on the theme of "Prayer" was preached by the Reverend Alec Rice, Minister of The United Church of Canada, who used as his text the words of St. Mat- thew 21:22. The choir uader the leadership of Mrs, V. P. Stouf- fer led in the hymn-sing prior to the service and also sang as an anthem "'Tis the Blessed Hour of Prayer". The offering was received for The Canadian Bible Sogiety and amounted to Fre] given to them and to the con- gregation, the other elders wel- Sr » & + 4 Y NK] [\}
