Effective JULY 13- + 15-16 'of just less than 80% dd PORT PERRY STAR Thursday, « July 14, 1966 LR Figures for the first five months of 1966 indicate that Ontario is in for a record-break- ing tourist year, according to Honourable James Aud, Ontario Minister of Tourism and Infor mation, [ Mr. Auld said that figures released today show ay, increase of nearly 13 percent in the num- ber of U.S. automobiles enter- ing the province for the months of January to May, 1966, com- pared with a similiar period last year. The remaider of Canada show- ed an increase of only six per cent. The number of traveliei's vehicle permits issued at Ont- ario border points for the five months totalled 1,801,043, a gain of 205,944 over the Janu- ary-May period a year ago. - "These figures," Mr, Auld said, "Show 'the pre-eminent role played by Ontario in Cana- dian tourism. They also illus- trate the rapidly increasing im- portance of tourism in the Ont- ario economy." A factor in this increased winter and spring business, the minister said, is his depart- 'ment's year round advertising campaign and special skiing promotions, Last year, the minister said, U.S. tourist spending in Ontario alone totalled an estimated $33,400,000. This is an increase %o since 19569 when U.S. spending in the province totalled $185,000,000. Ontario, he emphasized, re- ceives 56% of all U.S. tourist spending in Canada, plus ano- ther 40% of all overseas tour- ist - spending" in Canada. In 1965, the latter amounted to an additional $34,800,000 for Ont- ario. : Ontario's aggressive advertis- ing and promotion programs in the United States, Mr. Auld said, have paid handsome divi- dends in the years since 1960. In these years, he said, the total U.S. population has grown by only 9.1% while the total number of U.S. cars entering Ontario has swelled by 26% to -a total of 7,143,630 in 1965. "Of even greater importance" Girl Guides Can Now Earn A St. John,s Ambulance Certificate What's blue and might just save your life? The answer is a Girl Guide, Starting 'today, Guides can earn an officially approved St, John Ambulance first aid badge --as well as a home nursing in- signia--following the singing of a formal agreement - between the two organizations, "+. The agreement, patterned on a similar arrangement set up between St, John and the Boy Scouts of Canada in 1964, will provide ultimately for - Guide Badges, adapted from the fami- liar white cross of St. John, to be worn by those passing the required tests, St. John has maintained a close 'association with the Girl Guides for many years. The latest move is important in that it ensures a nationwide uni- formity of standards for first aid and home nursing training, Both oganizations are enthu- siastic over the signing. Co- for Guides everywhere to rea ceive the best possible training, and is a significant step in St, John's effort to prepare Cana- dian youth to handle everyday emergencies, operation at national and pro-|' vincial levels makes it possible | Ontario In For A fo Breaking Tourist Season said the Minister, "is the fact that more of these visitors are staying longer. In 1960, 811, 725 of the U.S. cars entering Ontario stayed in the province three days or longer. In 1965 this figure had swollen to 1,140,410--an increase of more than 40%." "The July 1-4 weekend, Mr. Auld said, was one of the busi- est ever in Ontario. . Checks with the department's reception centres at four major points -- Niagara Falls, Point Edward, Barrie and Cornwall-- showed that U.S. . travel into the province was greater than on the holiday weekend a year ago. Officials at the Bluewater Bridge at Point Edward near Sarnia said that U.S. cars were crossing into Canada at an July 4. Niagara Falls bridge also show- ed a significant increase over the 1965 holiday weekend, the minister said, Port Perry Council News The Port Perry council at the last regular meeting accepted a tender for the removal and re- placing concrete sidewalk on Queen Street from James W. sq. ft. ] * UR The following building per- mits were issued: Arthur T.
