'cheap, What's The Destiny Of The The following article writ- ten by Mary Jukes of the Globe and Mail, should be of considerable interest to the Star readers since it concerns this area. The cosy little country retreat you, thought you might get by buying a -one-room schoolhouse, may be only a pipe dream. The schools that are no longer in use are getting harder to buy. At least one township school board will not sell to private owners; others are making so many restrictions that buyers are discouraged, Schoolhouses that are sold range in price from a few hundred dollars to more than $2,000, Many are minus their bell towers because boards have found them a pro- fitable item. Ted Jackson, a Port Perry auctioneer sold one last year for $76. In 1963 there were 2,254 one- room schools still in use in Ontario. By 1965 regional con- solidation had caused the num- ber to drop to 1,463. There is no record of the number of un- used schools still standing, The township school board is responsible for the disposition of unused school buildings. In Ontario County the Reach Twp. Board opposes sale to private owners because of what it terms an unfortunate experience. Ten years ago the board sold two one-room school houses at public auction, Since then one {One-Room School House is in fair condition but the other has deteriorated into a "disgrace to the township", board member Byron Holtby said in an interview. Broken window panes stuffed with newspapers, a yard that looks like a junk heap are only some of the eyesores, he said. Mr. Holtby explained that taxes on a one-room school- house are low because they are based on size, age and condi- tien of the building, which usu- ally has no running water and no indoor plumbing. If a large family continues to use it as it is, taxes are calculated on the old assessment, and the cost of educating the children falls on other taxpayers in the com- munity, The cost of educating the country child has risen sharply, New schools are being built and the cost of transporting child- ren is borne by township school boards. "We have problems enough without getting into real estate business," - Mr. Holtby said. Reach School Board's policy is to tear down the one-room schoolhouse no longer in use and sell the land to someone who must obey the township's by-laws for new buildings, "We can average around $400 for an acre of school land," Mr, Holtby said. The wrecker charges no- thing for the job because the material is his and there's a good market today for old bricks and old lumber. "We. don't really want té de- troy these old buildings. But it's the only way to keep them out of the hands of undesirable buyers, If there was some or- ganization willing and capable of taking them over for some other use--we'd be happy. Pick- ering Township has turned one of theirs into a museum," he added. 'Five years ago a group of township citizens decided to convert Brougham school (built in 1859) into a museum. They bought it from the school board for $2,600, raising the money by public subscription, Activity in nearby townships has inspired Catherine Christie of Reach to wage a one-woman battle against the demolition of schoolhouses in her area, 8he owns a pre-Confederation farm house northeast of Whitby and is concerned with the preserva- tion of Ontario's historic build- ings. She believes the one-room schoolhouse in this category: SAVE 10cl HOSTESS POTATO CHIPS | BEST BUY!
