PORT PERRY IGA 'was a clear indiction of our PORT PERRY STAR * » } yore 0 il PRAM, El THURSDAY, NOV. 10, 1966 ~ 11 HILLTOP HERALD On Thursday and Friday of last week the Annual Commen- cement Exercises took place, marking one of the most im- portant educational events dur- ing the school year. At the Junior Commencement on Thursday afternoon, prizes from many of our local associa- tions and residents were award- ed. Also the entrance certifi- cates were presented at this time to our grade nines. On Friday night our Senior Com- mencement opened at 8.00 to a full house of over 600 pepole. We were all pleased to see the community take such an active interest in our educational ac- tivities. During the evening many of our outstanding gradu- ates and students were awarded greatly admired trophies and plaques. Also on the evening's pbgramme was the presenta- tion of the Secondary Sihool Graduation diplomas and the Statements of Standing for the completion of grade ten. Fol- lowing the regular programme parents enjoyed refreshments with the teachers in the cafe- teria. It appears that the weather last Wednesday, November 2nd Junior football game. The mor- ning dawned on a most unex- pected-snowfall, This precipi- tation turned into a cold all- day drizzle which seemed de- termined to put a stop to the scheduled football game be- tween Stouffville and Port Perry. But with set persever- ance the two teams met on the snow-covered field and fought out the muddiest, coldest and most miserable game of the year, Several times during the game the rain resumed falling but the teams played on. Stouffville opened the game with an unconverted touchdown in the first half. However Port came back on the kick off from centre field when Brian McNab picked up a bouncing ball around our 30 yard line and ran a spectacular 90 yards for a touchdown. Both teams also scored a safety point so that after regulation playing time the score was 7 all. It was de- cided to continue into overtime in an effort to determine the winner and yet after two com- plete halves neither team had scored. With darkness almost approaching, and both teams freezing ¢old, a re-match was planned for Monday, November 7 at Stouffville. This game was even more dismal as Port lost 13-0 despite a fine effort by the team to stay in the championship competition. Our senior football was also put out of the running when they were defeated by Picker- ing College, playing away from home. We wish to congratu- late both our junior and senior teams for their fine efforts and determination during the foot- ball season.
