Ar WHITBY DETACHMENT During the past week, Whit- by O.P.P. were kept busy 'in- vestigating 30 accidents. The snow and bad weather were partly responsible but the greatest fault still lies with drivers. There was one death, 11 injuries, 12 drivers were charged. There was some use made of radar in built up areas 'and numerous spot checks made. One hundred and sixty- five drivers were checked and O.P.P. Weekly Report of these 96 were charged and 28 warned." One impaired dri- ver was arrested and 4 persons were charged with lesser liquor offences. There were 43 General Oc- currences and a large number of these were autos abandoned, on the highway. There were only 2 Break and Enters and 2 Thefts. Two autos were stolen and 1 was recovered. Several complaints were alse received about hunters and it seems that some people still haven't learn: ed that permission must be ob- tained from the owner before hunting on someone else's pro- perty. * * 0% Driving Tip If you must leave your auto- mobile on the highway, due to { engine failure or bad weather, notify your nearest O.P.P. De- tachment so it will be checked periodically. Arrange to re- move it as soon as possible, otherwise, it will be removed by a police officer, as-it is neces- sary to keep road shoulders clear to facilitate snow removal. PORT PERRY STAR -- THURSDAY, JAN. 5, 1967 Examination Now Required To Operate A Motorcycle 90-day instruction permits for the operation of motorcycles in Ontario will be abolished early in 1967, Transport Minister Irwin Haskett announced re- cently, The change is among a set of new regulations governing the examination and licensing of motorcycle riders in the prov- ince. Starting January 1, anyone applying for a licence to ride a motorcycle will be required to pass an examination in its op- eration. He will be issued a driver's licence endorsed for the opera- tion of motorcycles only. After March 31, it will be an offence to ride a motorcycle in Ontario without a driver's lic- ence bearing a motorcycle en- dorsement. An "applicant 'wishing to op? ' erate other motor vehicles in addition to motorcycles must pass a separate examination and will then receive a licence en- dorsed for both. Persons who: now operate motorcycles on drivers' licences will be able to convert thei licences to: include the motor- cycle endorsement provided enced drivers. The new motorcycle drivers' examinations will include both written and practical tests. The written portions will include all questions on the regular driv- er"s examination as well as questions regarding safe motor- cycle operation. _ After passing the written test; the applicant must be able to identify and illustrate the use of the controls on his vehicle. He must also demonstarte start- ing and stopping, brake and Mr. Haskett said that Ontario is: among the first jurisdictions in North America to introduce regulations specifically aimed: at safe operation - 'of motor- cycles. The need for them arose fro7 the extraordinary recent growth in the use of motorcycles in of accidents in which they have been involved. At the end of September this year, there were 36,827 motor- ince, 59 per cent more than at the: end of September, 1965. The 1965 increase was 133 per cent over the previous year. Also, up to the end of Sep- tember this year, motorcycles were involved in 3,221 acci- dents--in which there were 42 fatalities and 2,475 injuries. In all of 1965 there were 2,390 motorcycle accidents, compared with 867 in 1964. Many of the motorcycle riders involved in these accidents were in the 16 - 19 age group, and among these were many who were learners operating on instruction permits. 20 % Increase For Top Men hh Ontario County Council, by a Mecorded vote of 21 to 10, ap- proved a 20 per cent salary. in- crease for its department heads at its last meeting of the year.
