Weekly Report A rash of weekend accidents spoiled an otherwise good week in Whitby Detachment area and brought last week's accident total up to 27. Speed too fast for road or traffic conditions appeared to be the major cause, as most of the drivers involved blamed the snowy condition of the: roads for their mishaps. Whitby O.P.P. Officers patroll- ed 14,300 miles and checked 157 drivers Eighty - seven drivers were charged and 60 drivers were warned. Thirty + General Occurrences were recorded and include sev- eral requests for property checks while owners are on holidays, complaints of hunters on private property without permission, one man arrested in a cottage and charged Break and Enter, one report of mali- cious damage and one drunk driver arrested. In an attempt to reduce the mounting toll of pedestrians killed and injured on controlled access highways, the govern- ment has passed legislation pro- hibiting pedestrian traffic on certain portions of controlled access highways. The only ex- ceptions are persons engaged in police duties, highway mainten- ance and construction or in case of an emergency. On Wednesday, January 18th, they defeated Ux- bridge 47 - 25 in a game during | which the second string was able to keep the opponents from scoring for over four min- utes. Although the success was due to the teamwork of the 1st string. John MacMaster certain ly stood out leading the scor- ing. Again on Friday 27th, the Intermediates downed Sutton 54-12 in a game which Port had | won by the end of the first quarter. The future looks good, as both Uxbridge and Sutton have defeated Brock, the only the official schedule. The Juniors are also going strong, having won all but one game, including two wins lately. They defeated Uxbridge and then on Friday, Sutton to a score of 81-38. They too should ldo well in the future. Our senior team is also getting or- | ganized and has won their last two starts against Uxbridge and Sutton, in two very close back .and forth games. The girls teams are playing now, also, and the juniors de- feated Sutton 41 = 40 while the seniors dropped a close: loss. On Wednesday 25th, the grade nine agriculture classes travel led to Toronto to view a Cana- dian Farm Machinery Show which included a preview of the Toronto Mounted Police's musi- cal ride. On 'Monday 30th, a represen+ tative from the personnel de- partment of General Mtotors in Oshawa visited the school to ' give a brief lecture on G.M.I, a technical institute in Flint Mi- chigan which is working on a co-op basis with G.M. Oshawa, to train engineers. . The talk in- ~cluded a few words by a form- er Port High student, who is I now taking this course, Bill Patterson.
