This drawing shows La Salle at the beginning of his most successful expedition. He took the land route between Toronto and Lake Simcoe, known as the Toronto carrying-place, a dis- tance of between 50 and 60 miles, and on through-the lakes to St. Joseph at the foot of From the Imperial Oil Collection ~ rying-place, August 1681. Rene Lake Michigan. During the win- 'ter of 1681-1682 he went down the Illinois, using his canoes as sleds on the river ice. He kept on down the Mississippi and formally took possession of the "country of Louisiana" for France. . x La Salle was a cold, ambitious man with many enemies. Had he not been so restricted by the opposition of his enemies, he may well have carried out his grandiose plans for colonizat- ion of America. And if he had rr 3 RUBS FOV bs beh Va LIC SEA f. 25 $ vit 9 h, » succeeded, it would have taken more than one seven year's war no doubt, to shake the hold of France on the interior. But La- .Salle was murdered by one of his own men in 1687. France held Louisiana until 1762,~when it was transferred to Spain and then returned to France in 1800. In 1803 Napoleon I sold it to the United States for 15 million. (This historical feature is one of a series readers may wish to clip and save.) 6G. Both the vault and the outsided walls will be fini- shed this summer. Preparations are in progress for pouring the five-foot-thick base slab of the vacuum build- ing. To serve as a pressure- relief/vessel for all four reactor buildings, its 168-foot ultimate height will make it the tallest Nuclear Plant Expansion Starts This Week structure on the site. Its walls are to be three feet thick. All this activity at the site of North America's second lar- gest nuclear power station can be witnessed from an outdoor observation deck behind Hydro's information centre, located on high ground overlooking Lake Ontario. The centre itself fea- tures trained guides, a color film on nuclear power and a 4,000-square-foot exihit area. Casual visitors are welcome seven days a week; larger group tours should be arranged in ad- vance. oo - [J oo # A go é 4 INGREASE THE "KILL-ABILITY" OF YOUR HERBIGIDE FOR GORN with IMPERIAL DRNTROL 3 262 OIL ...proven by Ontario Corn Growers Publication 75--"1967 Guide to Chemical Weed Control"..
