Progressive lay-offs in the automotive industry and in some feeder plants along with many high school stu- dents seeking summer and permanent jobs was blamed for most of the jobless in- crease. General Motors of Canada Ltd., are laying off workers car and truck model year. Mr. Russell said a steady demand was maintained for experienced farm workers last month. Seasonal activity increased vacancies in sales, tourist trade and catering occupa- tions. Life guards and cooks remained in short supply. The availability of execu- tive and professional clients to fill vacancies in the en- gineering field was not ade- quate. : Construction projects in spite of the wet weather and labor disputes. managed a steady pace. Shortages of qualified clients were noted in the following occupations: Automobile mechanics and bodymen, routemen, station- ary engineers, graduate me- chanical engineers, physical therapists, medical technolo- gists, nurses and graduate social workers. The Manpower Centre also place workers in jobs from parts of Durham County and other areas. Your RED CROSS is Serving Today Ready for fIToW - A i oh r h } yy 7 1 5. 5¢ le 3 RES .
