If a lottery such as the Irish Sweepstakes were to be held and it was announced that 40 to 50 local area resi- dents had won prizes total- ling hundreds of thousands of dollars most of us would eagerly shell out money to purchase tickets on the next race. We would figure that our chances of winning were pretty good and if we didn't win this year we would try again figuring that sooner or later our number would come up. - Statistics are funny things. When they show pleasant re- sults we accept them willing- ly. When statistics show that 40 to 50 of our local residents will lose their lives in traffic accidents each year we reject the thought that we might be included. Yet it is a time proven fact. For 40 to 50 of us our number will come up. Think on it for a while. Admit that it is possible that you will be killed. Of course if you wish to increase your chances of be- ing included in the statistics then drink before you drive. Have that one for the road. Exceed the speed limit. Ig- nore traffic signs. Get as close as you can behind the car ahead. Follow those few suggestions and the odds will be in your favour. The odds that is of being included in future fatal statistics. Sure it is always the other fellow that is killed but keep in mind also that to everyone but yourself you are that other fellow.
