Served five years as Honoured At Shaw Business College PORT PERRY STAR -- Hussey, Nov. 30th, 1967 -- 15 Margaret Vernon Chosen Valedictorian Mr. Chairman, Mr. Presi- dent, Members of the Staff, Fellow Graduates, Honoured Guests & Gentlemen: Good Afternoon. I am very honoured to be here today representing the 1966 - 67 Shaw Graduates. Particularly because we are celebrating the 75th Anniver- sary of Shaw Business Col- leges. On September 1st, 1892, the late Mr. Shaw had the foresight to realize the great demand that was de. veloping for qualified and competent women and men to take their places, as Sec: retaries, Bookkeepers, etc. in the Business World. The first College establishéd was known as the Central Busi- ness College of Toronto. It was from this small begin. ning that the great Shaw sys. tem emanated and which to- day comprises four (4) Col leges in Metropolitan Toron- to offering both Day and Evening Classes. It is from one of these Colleges that each and every- one of us are graduating. We are leaving our scholastic surroundings - and entering the Business World--a world that offers Challenge, Ad- venture and, not least of all, monetary rewards. A world where each person is expect- ed to work harmoniously with others, to accept respon- sibilities confidently, and to work accurately with a mini. mum of instruction and su- pervision. Reminiscing our school days we may well recall the spelling corrections; How did we feel when we had to re. write each one ten (10) times? Or the typing exer: cises that had to be typed three (3) times perfectly -- remember no erasures or strike-overs. But now, we see how these basic exercises and hard work unite to pro- duce qualified and competent graduates to enter into the Business World. After all isn't this the main objective of the Shaw system? However, the fact that we are graduates of Shaw Busi: ness Colleges does not neces: sarily mean that we are quali- fied to become an executive or valuable member of a corporation. It is only by acquiring respect and experi- ence in our chosen fields that we may hope to climb the ladder of success. With the assets which each gradu- ate in this room today pos- je . . . ] sesses, coupled with imagina- tion and determination, will he journey alone embarking the good ship "Career" which travels the sea of "Life". In preparing this address 1 came across a Penmanship exercise from which I per- sonally derived much more than just handwriting prac- tice. Perhaps some of you will be familiar with the ex- ercise which I would now like to quote: "It is not what men eat, but what they digest, that makes them strong; not what vie gain but what we save, that makes us rich; not what we read, but what we absorb, that makes us learned; not what we preach, but what we practice, that makes us ami- able,' On behalf of my fellow gra- duates and myself, I would {ike to take this oppprtunity, K \ |} to express a word of grati- tude to each member of the staff. For without their per- sonal interest, patience and words of encouragement, many of us would not be seated here this afternoon. Also, I would like to thank those parents who not only dence in their daughters and sons. I am sure their ample reward is the pride they are experiencing here today. In conclusion, I would like to wish you, not all my fel- low classmates, but now my fellow graduates, all the best of luck; may you all be en- J ~ ae x Cl PER Ee we a - i; Rl 7 phos na = 3 2, TO THE RATEPAYERS OF THE TOWNSHIP OF REACH I wish to express thanks to those who nom- inated and supported in acclaiming me for Deputy-Reeve of 1968 - 1969. I will work for the best interest of the Township of Reach and as a representatve to County Council. Wishing all a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Chester Geer. es ---~ <. ET ra eT TO THE RATEPAYERS OF REACH TOWNSHIP / I respectfully solicit your vote on Dec. 4th For School Board Representative I am 33 years old, married, and father of three children. I have lived in this Township from 1955- 1961 and moved back here last winter. I, however, do not ask for your vote on the basis of this short autobiography, or even on the usual vague promise of "good and efficient representation". Rether, the time has come -that we must rally to preserve that which historically and traditionally is ours: the right to control the education of our children. The Government's announced intention to reduce the number of Boards by more than 1500 will almost eliminate the parent's direct influence on educational affairs, all for the sake of some dubious efficiency. The parents, not. the state, must carry out this educatione] task and I promise to do my utmost to try to preserve as much as possible of this traditional parental role. Whatever your choice of Candidate, make use of that privilege to vote. RESPECTFULLY YOURS, .
