Check The Label On Your Paper Ice Fishing Popular Sport During the winter of 1948 there were 860 fish huts on the ice of Lake Simcoe. From 1948 to 1960, ice fish- ing became very popular and each-year- attracted sev- eral hundred more anglers. The count in 1960 revealed. over 4,000 fish huts. At the time it appeared the number of fish huts had reached the peak, since there was very little change in the number of huts from 1960 to 1967. Figures for the past 5 years show the following number of huts on the lake: 1967 -- 3,893 1966 -- 3,900 1965 -- 3,843 1954 -- 4,079 1963 -- 3,963 The recent 1968 .survey showed a decided increase, with a total of 4,500 - 607 more than in 1967 --repre- senting the largest number of fish huts ever to be _placed on the lake. Conservation Officer Har- old Van Wyck, who has been conducting the aerial sur- veys for a number of years, suggests two factors that could contribute to the large increase this year--the lake freezing over early with the temperatures. keeping well |] below zero for a consider- able length of time, making nearly perfect ice conditions and more anglers taking ad- vantage of this worthwhile sport with the modern up- |! to-date travel by snowma- chine. In another report Conser- vation Officer Andrew Flet- cher at Brooklin stated that although Lake Scugog has been open to ice fishing for the past 2 or 3 years, it wasn't' until' February 29th that 3 Oshawa fishermen fin- ally broke the ice and tried their luck. This Lake doesn't offer quite the quality of fish or fishing that its neighbour holes about 30 yards off the Government dock at Port Perry in about 4 or 5 feet of water. Fishermen are encouraged 'to take advantage of the fact that Lake Scugog is open to winter fishing, and is obvi- ously a likely spot for some tasty perch, as well as "mud cats" a little later on when they start biting. Be advised though, cau- tioned Mr. Fletcher, that ice conditions .at this time of year, are subject to rapid changes, and be cautious at all times. Lake Simcoe does, but these | men caught well over 2 doz- en healthy sized perch in a couple of hours in the warm |: They were]: afternoon sun. kept busy running from line to line as they fished in open PORT PERRY JUDO $1.00 Annual Membersh JUDO CLASSES will be held at the SCOUT HALL--Beginning THURS.
