Installs Officers For '68 The eleven branches of Ontario South District Wo- men's Institute met in annual Convention on May 23, 1968 in Altona Community Centre President, Mrs. Mervin Annis of Brougham reported a busy and fruitful year. An increase in the number of 4-H Clubs, the presentation of advanced achievement awards to Miss Pat Horden -and-- Miss - Barbara Carson were noteworthy achieve. ments, Board Director Mrs. Now man Payne of Thornhill pre- .sented her report from the Federated Women's Institute of Ontario. She was happy to report an increase in the number of branches in Ont- ario. The number in 1967 was 1376 -- in 1968 there are 1397 branches. Plans are being made to entertain some members of A.C.W.W. who will stop over here on their way to the Conference in Michigan in late August. Reports: of the various standing. committees were read and discussed during the morning session. The members of Altona Women's Institute served a buffet luncheon at the noon hour. A short memorial service was conducted by Mrs. Jas. Harris of 'Altona. Nine mem- bers of the district had pass- ed away . during the year. Mrs. Lorne Parrott presented the Secretary's report and the financial statement. It was announced that the Tweedsmuir History Com. mittee have planned a tea to be held in<Brougham Hall on June 10th at 2 p.m, Meb- invited. The annual district picnic will be held in Beaverton Park on July 9th at 12 noon. The Central Area Conven- tion, in the Royal York Hotel Toronto on Nov. 6, 7, 8th. Hamilton and tour to Duf- ferin Castle may be decided on, won't be too long a trip and is a lovely city to visit. Usually on return home we all enjoy a hot dinner at one of the popular restaurants and always a happy get to- gether. Cards enjoyed, Lunch ser- ved by group in charge. Next Euchre will be Sat., June 8 at 8.30 p.m. at Hall. Money made certainly adds to Club Last Euchre May 25, set up 18 tables, good time for all... Clark Muirhead "Blitz Squads" To Cover Riding Blitz Squads will carry the Muirhead Message to every home in Ontario Riding dur- ing the next few weeks. Organized workers armed with election kits will be working along with Conser- vative candidate Clark Muir- head as they call on the more than 40,000 voters that make up Ontario Riding. Mr. Muirhead has been out in advance of his 'workers |: calling at homes in Ajax and Bay Ridges. This week the door-to-door campaign gets into full swing. Ajax, Pickering, Whitby, Brooklin, Keswick and Sutton are only a few of the places to be visited this week. "I would like to meet every voter in the Riding," Mr. Muirhead said, "and I espe- cially would like to welcome all the newcomers. PORT PERRY STAR -- Thursday, June 6, 1968 -- To Be Wed In July Miss Bonnie Frances Wallace will become the bride of Paul Douglas Myles on Saturday, July 13th in Port Perry United Church. The bride-elect is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Ross Wallace, Port Perry and her fiancé is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd P. Myles, Brant- ford. Miss Wallace and her fiancé are both graduates of Queen's University. PORT PERRY UCW The U.C.W. of the Port Perry United Church met May 14th. Pres. Mrs. Sam Cawker occupied the chair and opened the meeting with a poem "What is a Smile" and a short prayer. The wor- ship service was in charge of unit 2. Mrs. Mary MacTavish gave the thenie entitled "The Church". One of the out- standing thoughts was 'God builds no churches--by His plan this is left for man'. Hymn 112 "I Love Thy King- dom Lord" was sung and Mrs. Smallman read the scripture and closed the wor- ship service with prayer. -The minutes were read and approved and business dis- cussed. Mrs. Fred Crawford thanked the committee for their help with the telephone euchre and said the proceeds were $225. Mrs. E. G. Mi- chell was winner for the ladies with a score of 83. Mr.. Geo. McMillan from Toronto upheld the honour of the gentleman with a score of 80. It was felt that this had been a. very successful project. After the business had been completed Mrs. Roy Cornish chairman of Citizenship and Social Action gave a talk on "The Talents and Skills of the Canadian Indians". Mrs. Cornish said there were 250,- 000 Indians in Canada and told us of their increasing prominence in Canadian life. This interesting talk- was climaxed with the rendition of 'Canada', a poem by Paul- ine Johnston. Mrs. Letcher read letters from our Foster child who is now entering high school. The agent from the organi- zation gave a fine report on the lad's progress and Mrs. Letcher said she would con- tinue to write to him.
