Hill; Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd |- Port Perry Figure Skating Club Large Number Of Members The general meeting of the Port Perry Figure Skat- ing Club was held on May 9 in ~ the Municipal Office. There was an excellent att- endance, and encouragingly for the future, with the younger members there in force. The meeting began with the president, Mrs. Ruth Franssen reading her report which comprised a full, highly interesting and at times nostalgic chronicle of the season's events. High- lights included the club's joyous participation in the successful July 1st Centenn.- ial Parade; a never to be forgotten registration day when a tired but jubilant executive finally completed enrollment of the largest membership ever, 220. - Excitement, recaptured a- gain when the president described the success of Port Perry's own Anna and Rich- ard in the Canadian Champ- ionship and their inclusion and 'subsequent dazzling per- formance for the Canadian Olympic team in the Winter Olympics at Grenoble, Fran- ce, the reception both at the airport and arena. Next the carnival, that ex- citing event which shortly after Christmas becomes the 'Raison D' Etre' for so many of us and for which all other things are relegated to a secondary role, temporarily at any rate. Exciting and successful it was, and again as a club first it was pres- ented on two evenings to a] packed. and highly Apprecia: -ive happy-crowd. Finally Mrs. Franssen des- cribed the Run on the Bank, both banks that is, to start the 'Perry- Winkle Fund through which the club hopes some skating dreams come true. i ~ Next followed the financ- ial report which described the small cash balance and the consider ets held in costumes, rops and rec- ords. 'After the adoption of this report it was moved and agreed to by 'all that a reec- ommendation be made to the new executive that the fees in the 1968-1969 season be increased to $15.00 per single member and that family membership be in- creased to $35.00. Mrs. Owen Reader our test convener reported that a number of children had successfully completed all 12 of their National Skating Tests this year. She present- ed national skating badges to Anna and Richard. Mrs, Jim Baird presented the report of the nominating committee and" moved its adoption which was carried. Both were present when Nancy Greene won her Gold - Medal, and both saw the Canadian hockey team lose to the Russians. It was good to hear that the Canadian team had been praised by all at Grenoble as easily the best dressed. At the end of this spirited inside account of the Winter Olympics Howard Hall thank-|- ed the Champions and - at the same time expressed the warmest appreciation of the retiring executive for the 'president Ruth Franssen and her husband, Joe Franssen, the Carnival director. Church service Sunday. at Ala nis AAS TELE PIS (8 CER Students Recitals, Parties Held In Teacher's Home "June is the month of Re- citals and the time when all music students end the seas- on with presentations of their very best efforts: Mrs. J. E. Jackson, ATCM, RMT, held three fine pro: grams in her home this year and ended each with a party for her 'many pupils and their guests. which were greatly appreciated by those involved. The first recital was pre. sented bythe senior piano pupils of Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Frank Godley, and voc- al pupils of Mrs, Frank Hast- ings. All were well prepared for their performances and each showed real musician- ship in their interpretations of the varied styles of com- posers. One would be lax in- deed if mention were not made of the quality and tone of the singers and players heard in each presentation. -It was a-delightful exper- fence to be present at the Junior boy's recital where all the young fellows, dress- ed in their finest attire, took their places at the piano fo play with such style and gusto. One could hardly rec- ognize these poised young| players as the local ball and hockey fans. It was obvious that they enjoyed their mus- ic as much as heir more act- ive pursuits. The final recital was given by the Junior girls, who not only played well but looked lovely in, their colourful dresses as they performed- eo for their mothers, fathers, 'grandmothers and friends. Their : numbers were well chosen and had been care- fully studied for this import- ant occasion. To list the individual num- bers would require too much space, but the great com. posers, Bach, Beethoven, Chopin and Mozart, were well represented, as were folk songs and the contem- porary styles. Congratulations to all the pupils involved for these: fine three musical evenings which were possible only be- cause each gave his very best. Congratulations to the tea- chers for their careful work in preparing their students for the culmination: of the season's work. A happy holiday to all the pupils and teachers and hope that they may return fresh and enthusiastic to 'resume studies in the fall.
