Rion ing [PORT PERRY . * STAR x Lakers Win Lacrosse Semi - Finals Playoffs in any sport pro- duce tensions and tempers tend to -become frayed -as players lose control of them. selves. Such feelings were amply pgesent in both games play- ed on the week-end. Sunday, September 1: The semi - final series between Cresswell and Port Perry opened at Little Britain. The game was fast and exciting, The two clubs stayed neck. and-neck for the first period, which ended 5-5. Then, in the second, Cress. well took- two quick penal- ties. Lakers capitalized on both by feeding Wayne Ash. tan who potted both goals. Keeping the pressure - up, Port fired enough shots to keep. Cresswell moving and walked off with a six-goal bulge at the end of the period, 12-6. sDesperate, Cresswell came out hard in the third stanza determined to ¢lose the gap; but the Lakers were still.hot and when the final buzzer ~went, the-~season's largest score had been recorded; a "4-3 for Port, convincing 19-9 victory for Port. ~ Excellent refereeing kept the game well under control. Scoring for Port was di- verse: Allan Ashton and Ed Judd each scored 4 times; Wayne Ashton potted three, Bob Reeson 2 and Walt Kar- as, Aldon Smith, Rick Dixon, Grant Slute, Bill Taylor and Russell Stephens (4 assists) had singles. Monday, September 2nd, returning to Port Perry for the second game in the best tow of three series, both clubs-found each other very tough. Scoring was decided- ly lower but that only added to the tension and excite- ment. Passing was a little sloppy on Port's account and Cress- well took a 2-0 lead, only to end the period on the short end of a 3-2 count as Lakers rallied. Excellent goal-tend- ing by Tom Appleby kept Port in the game as their shooting became erratic. "The second period ended "Determined not to lose in straight games, Cresswell decided to deviate from lacrosse and began tak- ing runs "at Port's players. The referees did an excellent job in keeping -any fights from breaking out. The tac- tic seemed to work as Cress- well kept within range of Port, but then the prettiest play of the night killed their attack. Bob Reeson jamed loose a ball and then outran three Cresswell players and beat the goaltender cleanly. The final score was Port Perry 9, Cresswell 5, thus Cresswell is .eliminated. - Scorers for Port were Al lan Ashton, Ed Judd, "Beb Reeson and Paul Solomon with two goals apiece and Rick Dixon with a single. Who Port Perry meets in the finals is as yet unknown for the other series is not completed. Their opponents will either be Sunderland or Uxbridge. The next home game will be advertised. Come on out and cheer your Lakers to victory and a lea- gue championship. ~ They're already half-way there.
