Sneaker Explains Fifect [+ Of Drugs And Narcotics John Powell, Sergeant of Detectives of the Oshawa Po- lice Department made a strong and lasting impression on some 30 members of the Lions Club, a number of tea: chers from both Public and High Schools as well as a few students from the High Schools while a speaker at the regular meeting of the club, Monday. Mr. Powell had chosen as his topic, "Drugs and Nar- cotics", and for a man who has witnessed the drama, the horrors, and crimes from the use of drugs and narcotics, he appeared an unusually 'mild-mannered person. However, it was obvious that what he had seen and experienced for 23 years while on the Oshawa Police Department had made him convinced the only way of stamping out the horrible crimes of selling or using narcotics is to enforce the law. He delivered a most inter- esting message, and did it with a solid background of knowledge, and what he told the attentive listeners was delivered with the intention not to forget what terrible consequences could be the result: of "only trying it once." : His speech, the film shown. and the question period af- terwards deserve large audi- ences. It was educational, while terrifying, but possibly the best method of making people understand this 20th century demoralizing and filthy habit would be to show films such as was shown on Monday night, in everyl school, club and organization throughout Canada. Mr. Powell's speech de- serves a great deal more space in the columns of the Star, but unfortunately space is limited. Mr. Powell was introduced by Stan Mumford and the club's appreciation was. ex- tended by Wm. Sharpe.
