PORT were Cox (declined), Ted Jackson (declined), William Williams (qualified), Glen Wanamaker (declined). Following nominations, clerk-treasurer, John F Raines; was appointed to chair the meeting. He said the present council had been active and co-operative, and that much had been accomplished during the last term of office, Reeve J.J. Gibson was first speaker, and expressed his gratitude to the members of council, who had all worked diligently and in the interest of the citizens of Port Perry. Problems are getting greater every year, Mr. Gibson said, and suggested that meetings fay have to be held more frequently. With Regional Government in mind, Mr. Gibson continued he would like to see an amalgamation of Port Perry, Reach and Scugog Townships. Taking this step, he was certain that the municipalities would have a stronger voice in County Council. Mr. Gibson accepted nom- inatiocii, and said he had been reeve of Port Perry for the last 12 years, and two years as councillor previously. He'd "{like to see the sewage project completed and Port Perry Centennial in 1971 while still reeve of the municipality, and asked for support to accomp- lish this. Deputy-reeve, Bruce Beare, chairman of Fire Protection Committee, reported numbers |of fires had increased in 1968. Fires in Port Perry were six in 1967, nine in 1968; Township of Scugog, two in 1967, six in 1968; Reach leven in 1967 one in Town of Whitby in 1968 for a total of 19 fires in 1967 and 33, in 1968. Mr. Beare also reported on the water situation, and said the new well is working satisfactory and has a flow of 300 - 400 gal. per minute compared to 150 gal. for the old well. Mr. Beare accepted nomination, and when the other candidate, Phil Orde, later declined nomination, Mr. Beare was acclaimed to his former position. } After 10 years or more as councillor, Robert Kenny said, he would like to have a chance to serve as ~ reeve of the municipality, and . accepted nomination. Chairman of Road Dept- ment, Mr. Kenny didn't believe any member of the department was overpaid, but it still takes a large portion of the budget. Several side- walks had been repaired, he said, but the budget does not permit all repairs needed. Paxton Street had been com- pleted this year, in order to make access for the construct- ion of the new hospital. In regard to the sewage project, Mr. Kenny explained to council he asked the Prov- ince to go ahead with the construction of about 90%. However, this is a costly undertaking, and he suspected that the Municipal Board although approving the project may ask to scale it down some. He was under the opinion the community as™a whole did not need sewers. However, in the = down- town area, some places are pretty stinky, and sewers are a must, Mr. Kenny said. Mr. Phil Orde, chairman of Finance, said the financial situation of Port Perry is quite good. Although--debentures appear high, $14,666,400, the greatest portion concerns the High School, $1,104,5600.,and ,| Port Perry is responsible for of this amount. 'only 16% As far as the Arena is concerned, Mr. Orde said, we like to see it carries the finan- cial load itself, but if we do have to pay towards it up- keep, in his opinion that would be in order for the sake of all the children who enjoy hockey and figure skating. Mr. Irving Boyd, who recently moved to Ajax, where he is contesting a seat .on the council, said he had enjoyed living in_Port Perry, and his participation on the Village council. In the absence of Mr. Arthur Cox, chairman of the Hydro-Electric Commission, Mr. Ted Jackson presented the report. happy to give the report on behalf of the chairman, Mr. Cox or Mr. Hydro, as he also affectionately named him.
