BRUCE BEARE RNR RG EIA od 1] Ratepayers Agree Sewers Necessary In Port Perry Lf J Lg Continued ing, the Ontario Water Re- sources Commission, Mr. Leonard Petura, and Cana- dian Mitchell Associates Ltd. Carles" Kretch, who repre- sented the company who has engineered the plans for the sewage disposal project. Mr. Kretch explained the project, from its initiation in 1965, up to the:present stage. Mr. Petura, assistant dir- ector of the O.W.R.C. went back as far as 1957 when the first tests were made and polution was determined in Lake Scugog waters. The Commission, made a recommendation to the Vill- age council in 1964 that plans for a sewage system should be adopted after polution also had been discovered in the Village. Plans are to-build the pro- ject in three stages, and the first stage will cover 859 of the Village. The next two stages are expected to be completed in 1973 and 1978. 'The cost is estimated to be i & i) oA oy MN OAL about $1,300,000. and will be built, and owned by the Pro- vince of Ontario. To the average householder, with a 66 ft. frontage the annual cost was estimated to be $126.94, broken down as fol- lows: 66 ft. frontage at 40c. --$26.40, connection charge $14.40, 2409, surcharge on $36.00 water bill $86.40, for a total of $126.94. That the situation in Port Perry is bad as far as polu-4 tion is concerned was testi: fied to by Mr. Robincon, a representative from the Ont- ario County Health Unit. The Unit has investigated many "complaints concerning faulty septic thnks, he said, and the problem "of hauling sewage from public build- ings. Five places along the shores of Lake Scugog has been tested, and particularly where the storm sewers en- ter into the lake, polution is so bad that swimming in that area could be stopped next year. It was an interesting and well conducted meeting, and i Re nap hed o ke questions to the authorities present, questions with © great deal of common sense, which added new light: to many items in connection with costs, ete.
