More than the usual amount of after - harvest cultivation was also completed this fall. Although the acreage of wheat seeded in Ontario County in 1968 was above average, most of it will be fed on the farm where it was produced, said Mr. Fair, The high-yield crops in- cluded cereal grains, wheat, corn, and hay. The County competition for the highest yield of potatoes was won by Ches Lunney of | Zephyr, with a field of Ken- | nebec potatoes which yielded 830 'bushels per acre. Junior Farmer Clubs, of which there are four in Ont- ario County, are open: to young men and women 15 to 29 years of age. These clubs carry on a variety of projects, such as debating, public speaking, sports days, livestock and seed judging shows, and a variety of social activities. These clubs, which are centered in Brooklin, Port Perry, Beaverton, and Udney, conduct a regular monthly meeting, with the exception of July and August, said the agricultural representative. Despite the appearance of usual familiar aspects of! farming, the occupation is changing rapidly. Mr. Fair said that with the advent of fewer, but larger farms replacing the many small-acreage farms in the County and across Canada, farming is becoming more highly-specialized and more business-like in characteristic every day. Farmers now tend to spe- cialize in one crop, and are being aided by the Depart- ment of Agriculture's Farm Management Program, which is endeavoring to assist them in regognizing and adjusting to the changes that are tak- ing place, he said.
