EDITORIAL TOPICS Causes Controversy One of the pictures we published in the Star last was left, and made quite a mess of a small portion of Queen Street. We still maintain, it was unfortunate this incident "occurred on the main thoroughfare in the Village, and some measure should be taken to avoid further occur- rences of this kind. Since the picture was published, we have been informed that the cutline written, was to some extent erroneous, and for this we apologize. We don't profess to know anything about the mechan- ical workings of a garbage truck, but at first, we were under the impression the oil came from a leak in the trucks hydraulic system. It was later explained to us that . the oil running from the truck to the street was cooking - oil left in-containers for the men to pick up. Consequent- ly, when the containers are placed in the truck, with other garbage and pushed forward-to make room for more, the containers break open and the result is what was shown in the picture last week. Garbage collection is as honourable a job as a ut certainly not as pleasant as some. We have always been of by Mr. Slute and his men, and this one incident is cert- ainly not going to change our opinion. However, in order to eliminate incidents of this kind, some other method of collecting this type of garbage and co-operation from persons involved can only rectify this situation. The June 1969 review by the interdepartmental committee on the rabies situation in Ontario. was released today by Hon. Matthew Dymond, Minister of Health, Hon. W.A. Stewart, Minister of Agriculture --and- Food, and Hon. Rene Brunelle, Minister of Lands and Forests. The committee reminds Ontario residents and visitors * of the continuing problem & rabies infection in wild and domestic animals. : ~: During the summer many people will be vacationing in the resort areas and visiting provincial parks where - thé opportunity to contact wild animals is greatly ! increased. It is a wise precaution to avoid any contact "with wild animals, including any attempt to play with, coax or feed them by hand. In addition it is strongly urged that all dogs and cats be vaccinated against rabies especially before entering resort areas. go Should anyone be bitten or scratched by a wild or # «domestic animal, contact a physician-as soon as possible and in addition notify the local Medical Officer of Health, > Vaccine and serum are available free of charge through physicians to treat possible rabies infection. And we've come a long way from the backhouse to the bathroom. ¥ I don't know whether you'd call that progress o rnot. There's something to be said for both sides. You can't store coal and potatoes in the recreation room, for example. A definite disadvantage. On the other hand, you couldn't have a shower in the backhouse, unless the roof leaked and it was raining. Also a disadvant- age. a Fifteen years ago, I was suckered into a brand new pink bathroom, and I swore it would never happen again. -- Financially, it set- me back about a year. - Perhaps one shouldn't swear about such things. They're transitory, after all, and besides, it doesn't seem to help .much. = This month I've been suckered into another one. Not pink, thank Zeus. We're going through our: turquoise phase now. Do you know how much plumbers are getting these days? Of course you do. And carpenters and electricians? Well, I hereby swear once more a mighty - oath, and with all you witnesses, that I'll never install another new bathroom so long as us both shall live. Me and the bathroom, that is. When I conk out. my wife will be right into the in- surance money fo ranother- new- one, -#_ probably-in deép purple. What gets me is that there wast : : thing wrong with the one we had. had a perfectly good white a: tub. (The only thing I erjoyed about the whole installation was watching those plumbers move the 800-pound monster down the stairs). There wa snothing wrong with the tub except that you had to keep your big toe in the drain or the water would -run-out.- hour, with a drink, book and smokes, knee. We had a.perfectly good toilet that required the services of a plumber only about once a month, We had a towel rack that fell off the wall with a tre- 'mendous clatter only about twice a week, usually when the rest of the fam- es and Spice . to practise. ~And-as Flike to-soak:for an + This home on Elgin Street was owned by E. Cameron, and was known at one time as the "Heal Place" and is now owned by Mrs. Garvey. ily was asleep. . It wasn't exactly the bathroom you'd get in the;royal suite at the: Chateau Laurier. The sink had served 'many generations and was a sort of gray- -green.-- There was a bit of paint miss- ing here and there. I'm not an unreasonable man. I'd have gone for a new sink and maybe ten-twelve dollars worth of paint, and we'd have been right as rain, whatever that stupid expression means. - I said as much to my wife. And she said approximately. ten times as much to me. Ceramic tile, already. Turquoise "fixtures". New wallpaper to pick up the turquoise in the toilet and the gold fleck in the new linoleum, A yan" _built around the sink. A vanity! rotten kids. 'It's not really the money. You can't' take it with you. Though as an old friend of mine, who is loaded with the stuff says, "If I can't take 3 with ne, I. ain't goin'." It's the confusion of trying to co- ordinate carpenter, plumbers and elec- trician.. Either they're all working "someplace else and nobody can come, and you just sit there in-the wasteland. or they are all available at once and are bumping head and bums and gett- ing in each other's way, at five-some- : thing 'an hour, It's the endless decisions: Like where the toilet paper rack should: be install- ed. Can you imagine anything more ridiculous than a couple of adults sit- ting, fully clothed on the johnny and practising reaching for the tissue? Should it be on the wall straight ahead? 'Quite a reach, And what about little 'kids?, I offered to bring in some kids Should it be beside the toilet tank? With my bursitis you could break your arm off at the shoul: - der. Much ado about, nothing. But be! got my own back. When everything is complete, and up to my wife's rigid spe- cifications, I'm going to déemand that 'a whole section of tile be pulled out for the installation of a set of, electric toe-nail clippers.
