6 - PORT PERRY STAR ~~ Thursday, Sept. 11,1969 Letter To The Editor 23 Reach Residents Demand By-Law Enforced To our tellow-citizens with- in the Townships of Whit- chureh; -Uxbridge-and Reach, Greetings. The undersigned a group of rate-paying citizens resident in the south-west corner of Reach, where gravel- pit operators constitute a problem' Through the courtesy of are the Editor of this paper 'we. are addressing you in an effort to awaken the public con- science to the ravages being inflicted on our lovely rural landscape by the operators of these pits. This is not our problem alone. It-is- common to all who live in these areas cont- iguous to Toronto. The build- ing industry needs gravel and we have no desire to deny them access. to it. What we object to is the rough-shod methods of the operators. They are pursuing the almigh- ty dollar so vigorously that any---rights the public have are being trampled upon ruthlessly. Let is be remembered that the public have rights, In the Twp. of Reach there is a body of rules and regulat- ions known as By-Law No: 1886. This By-law came into force on the 5th day of Nov- ember, 1962. In it the rights of the public are clearly set forth, also the duties of the gravel-pit operators. Ideally, sO far as print is concerned, the interests of the public seem to be well secured. Are these interests really secure? If we thought so this letter would not be written. By-law 1886 calls, among other things, for a proper fence to surround the pit, a gate that may be closed, a FAA A A A SAS RL NN NN NN CN /' IA A A A AE LESSEE TTT C pup y TEENAGE DANCE Club Annrene'; Friday, September 12, 1969 Music by "THE INN CROWD" 2:00 p.m. to 12:00 o'clock ARERR NN NN YN RR ppp Spy vs The driving sound of Lear Jet Stereo 8... just 58 995 Surround yourself with 7: | commencing full-dimensional stereo phonic sound wherever you drive, with Lear Jet Stereo 8. A casual glance will show that these few rules are .-being observed in the breach rather than in tlre performance. , Other matters could be mentioned. "What is (rue of Reach is probably true of conditions in our neighbouring Town- ships. Rules and regulations can become worse than use- less. When not strictly enfore- ed they soon become a matter for ridicule. All we know of human nature tells us that undefended rights are speedily over-run .by rapacious greed. Against that we would rise. Properties in the vici..'y of these pits are suffering 'rom devaluation. The dust, the noise, the scars to the Jand scape, the destruction of nat- ural beauty, the lowering of values -- all these rolled together constitute an abom- ination of desolation;and that is what some of us see when we look out from our west windows. _ A group of concerned property owners have already waited upon the Council of] Reach and were graciously received. Thé problem was outlined and redress was sought. This could come in part through a proper enforce- ment of By-law 1886, though some of the infractions are now irremediable (spilled milk cannot be collected and pour- ed again into the bottle). Council, however, assured us of their sympathy and under- standing. That was on August 5th of this year. We are still looking for some action but the only change observable is a little tidying of the road- side that parallels the pit. Further representations will be made to the Council of Reach, but some form of 'united action seems not only desirable but necessary. In this regard the approaching munieipgl elections are not forgotten. Candidates with guts and gumption must be sought and elected. Voters will 'please keep this in mind. If some other means are advis;. able we would welcome advice and co-operative effort. For correspondence we support the name of Mr. Vaughan Deacon, R.R. 4, Uxbridge, Ontario. Sons and daughters of lovely Ontario, your heritage is at stake. Some of it is already lost. To the ramparts! -- Signed by 23 ratepayers on Concession 2, Reach Twp.
