For 'Wed. evening of Oct. 1st," Mrs. Betty Reader's group of the "Head" U.C.W. had planned a very pleasant time in the "Head" Church. But when members arrived|* they were surprised to find a very unwelcome atmos- phere of 'smoke being belch- ed out by the oil heater. "Al / few men got things under control and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Arnold came to our res- cue by inviting us into their home for the meeting. Fourteen ladies were pre- h sent including Mrs. Arnold, Mrs. Eastwood, Mrs. Cora Heayn and Mrs. Geo. Samells Jr. The pres. Mrs. Beryl Pearce opened the meeting with the hymn, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus", followed by prayer. Mrs. Betty Reader conducted a question and answer period on "Our Duty to God" from the United Church Catechism. The study was given. in the form of reading from a book entitled. "Travels with Char- lie"; The author travelled across 'U.S. with his black French poodle and attended church services of every de- nomination. But the one that impressed him ~ most was in Vermont where the minister delivered a non cushy, straightword '& rous- ing sermon that really made a person analyse his own life. . With Mrs. T. Redman at the piano, Mrs. Reta Wilson, Mrs. Betty Reader and Mrs. Beryl Pearce accompanied her in the singing of the old familiar hymn "The Little Brown Church in the Vale". In the roll call we were re- quested to guess the num- ber_ of phones listed in the Port Perry Directory. Mrs. Arnold came nearest with | her estimate of 2000. Correspondence was recei- ved from Mrs. Doug Crozier|. and Jennifer Pearce to ex- press appreciation for help|- with Sharon's wedding and Jennifer's gift following op- eration. Two donations were received, one being given to the visiting committee. Our Mystery Sister Banquet has been arranged for Nov. 26, : provided "Grace" U.C.W. can cater to us. "June" forfeit calendar| money and Thanksgiving Sox were received, It.was noted that several ladies from the "Head" were helping at the Hospital Tuck Shop last wk.
