Fit- ...- tingly the council and-other _ political offices have been held predominatly by farmers. To- day, however, there are many people living in Reach who do not earn their living principally from farming, and we feel that it is-time that such people should also have representation on the local council. We therefore urge these people to vote for Vaughan Deacon." Vaughan, a retired civil servant, is a well-informed self- educated man. He was assoc- iated from its beginning with the National Film Board, where he worked himself up from the ranks to become the man in charge of .distribut ion and circulation of the National Film Board program throughout Ontario. In 1947, while still a resident of Tor- 2 onto, he and his wife Betty "built a week-end home near 'Chalk Lake. Upon retirement they added to that home and have been living full time in Reach for the past eight years. Vaughan's main hobbies are carpentry work and cop- ing with the beat-up furniture that Betty hauls home from auction sales. Another of his preoccupations is involvement with local problems. Just recently the Deacons have been spearheading the cam- pagne to have by-laws enforc- ed controlling the operators of gravel pits in the Reach and Uxbridge area. 80 join the movement and vote for Vaughan. The resolution, sponsored by Reeve Robert Timbers of Scott Township and Deputy- Reeve Robert Nesbitt of Ux- bridge Township said that the province _ will assume the assessment of all properties in the province next year. However, only five .Ontario County municjpalities have been reassessed at market value. Mr. Timbers said whén the province takes over the Assess- ment work it will have the staff to complete the reassess- ment of the a more Next Year rapidly than had been the case in the past. He said it would be advantageous to individual municipalities as it. would remove the different equalization factors -whicli are now used. vo Mr. Nesbitt said the main ground work had been done, He could see advantage fron: the province taking over the work as the county assesc- ment staff seemed to have been dwindling during the past year, Reeve Cecil Fralick, Scugog; Township, said farm lands should be assessed as farr: lands and not on speculative values.
