There was certainly an emph- asis on individuality. There may have been several classes in one classroom, but the classes themselves were small; and much of the teaching was excellent, Today we have the best of several worlds in our schools, both elementary and second- ary. School -is an exciting place. This article, however, is dealing only with secondary schools. These schools are large today, but the greatest emphasis is on the individual student, whether or not that particular school is on individ- ual programmes. Schools are well equipped and the diver- sity in courses allows each student to develop his own interests. Mr. Bennett, who will as- sume his new post on Janu: ary 1, 1970, emphasized the personal approach to the arts in an. address to Gallery members, representatives of the city and the mass media. "I'm people oriented," Mr. Bennett said, as he described ways and means of attracting the general public to the gal- lery so that the community can take full advantage of its own cultural centre. We feel that you are interested in educational developments in all the secondary schools in schools which_your children are attending. Therefore, teachers will write columns dealing with such topics as new coursés -- World Liter- ature at the Ajax High School, Consumer Education at the Central Collegiate Institute, Oshawa, to mention only two of the new courses, activit- ies such as an evening which one teacher spent going out with police 'on their calls, and teachers' ways of handl- ing some problems in the schools.
