IVAN THOMPSON 705-357-3671 Evenings 986.4987 home, highway TA at Oak-| ) s $ phy, interrogation and meth- ods of detection in crime investigation. -- Mr. Nichols was able to go on a routine patrol with four detectives on a Friday night from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. and this 'routine' patrol was anything but dull. At one period in the even- ing, three calls involving break- ins came within twenty min- utes, These calls came from all the break ins might be the work of a gang. The teacher was presentwhen the police stopped and checked cars in the area. . At another time, a call came from a neighbour who objected to a noisy, teen- age party. The police toured the area and then checked out a certain house to see if the liquor control act was being violated by people under the age for legal consumpt- ion of liquor. = Mr. Nichols accompanied the detectives to a Justice of the Peace to obtain search warrants and then to the places to be searched. In one case, the police were looking for stolen goods, and this time r Patrols With Detectives a stakeout was used. In another case they were look- ing for drugs. In the latter case, one arrest was made, and the person arrested was in- terrogated intensely for two hours. "ihe The devotion to - duty shown by the. police "was impressive Mr..-Nichols felt. Two of the detectives he accompanied had already put in about four hours that day before they officially came on duty, and this happens fre- quently. In this instance, one detective' had had to appear in court, and the other had been on a stakeout. Mr. Nich- ols was also impressed 'by "the amount of paper work necessary in securing an arrest and making a con- viction. He was certainly pleased with the co-operat- ion given him. : At the end of the "routine" patrol, Mr. Nichols felt that he had gained a great deal of knowledge about the operat- ions of the police and some of the problems in society. He will certainly: be able to express a better understand- ing of many problems when he is talking to his students.
