However, the three students chosen were Philip Kerr, Ruth Treck and Derrianne Thompson. The young man spoke on the famous author, Jack London. It was spoken with sincerity and was very descriptive, Ruth Treck delivered an un- usual speech on "Etiquette. She relayed the manners and strange customs of different countries. An hilarious speech was presented by Derrianne Thompson on "How To Make A Speech, She was thoroughly enjoyed by the audience. This one told the humorous situation of writing a speech. Our representatives gave three, well delivered speech- es. Chryl Rahm "Our Generation." She told about hippies, love beads and drugs. "Pollution" was the topic of Carol Anne Sharpe's speech. She told mainly how | it affects our waters. Allan Faux's topic was 'Chinchillas' He spoke on the life of this fascinating fur bearing crea- ture. Even though our speak- ers were not placed in' the top three, they all spoke very well. Cherrie were the del- egates who attended the 8th annual meeting of the Unit- ed Church Women of the Oshawa Presbyterial held in Harmony United Ciiizeh | in Oshawa. You'll Tuesday evening, February 10th, Mrs. Don Beacock ably acted as co-hostess in 'the home of her mother-in-law, Mrs. Les Beacock where they planned a variety shower in honour of her only neice and bride-to-be, Miss Barbara Devitt of Oshawa. To the tune of the wedding march, Miss Judy Allison pinned a corsage on the dress of the future bride seated in a white chair with pink um- brella overhead. Miss Deb. Laroque assisted the bride- elect during the pleasant procedure of unwrapping and admiring the gifts after which 'Barbara expressed her gratefulness for the lovely and essential gifts and the evening in general. The nearly twenty relativ- es and friends enjoyed the "bridish" program provided by Mrs. L. Hunter, Mrs. Ron Wanamaker and Mrs. D. Bea- cock Birthday greetings were sung for Mrs. H. Jeffery. As usual the serving:-of lunch and chatting ended the hrid- al party. One: Saturday night recent- ly about twenty immediate relatives and near friends assembled as a surprise par- ty at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Newnham to offer special greetings to Cecil on the occasion of his birthday. The pleasant hours of the evening were climaxed by serving the customary delic- ious food, gifts and best wishes for the guest of hon- our.
