Entertainment and dancing followed. + * x Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gray, Carnegie Street, were recent visitors in Copper Cliff, where they attended the christening of their great-grandson, Ian Keith Samuel, son of Rev. and Mrs. R.K. Munroe. Ian was christened by his grand- father, Rev. Alec G. Rice, of Glenmount United Church in Toronto. * * x On Thursday, April 30th a farewell dinner was held at the Spruce Villa Hotel, Whitby in honour of 2 long standing members of the Community Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Marjorie Edwards who has been on the kitchen staff for 13 years will be missed for her. friendliness and culinary talents. Mrs.' Mickey Mahaffy who has been on the nursing staff for 10 years will be missed for her congeniality and competence in her nurs- ing duties. Gifts were presented to both ladies on behalf of the hospital by Mrs. Jean Gray. A separate gift was presented to each on behalf of their co- workers by Mrs. Dowson and Mrs. Warren, A delightful time was had by all that attended and we wish Mrs. Edwards and Mrs. Mahaffy the best in (their retirement. Woods operations in any one year cover a small per- centage of the much larger forest area which is producing the wood on which annual cuts are calculated. They also provide access to isolated areas. Under proper manage- ment, therefore, a forest region can supply both wood products and outdoor recreat- ion, forever. 'ROUND THE TOWN': INVEST NOW! VICTORIA & GREY TRUST. VER EHR AW GOR ITN FEI If we were all able to breathe clean air chronic respiratory diseases would be, less frequent and less severe, Atmosphere air pollution presents an increasing problem in the industrial city in part- icular, not only because of the factories but also because of the concentration' of motor vehicles with their harmful exhaust fumes, the burning of ThisWa, FROZEN FOOD FEATURES! In rural areas or in non- industrial towns and: cities, air. pollution poses. a minor problem: At this time it can be said that atmosphere air pollution of 'a significant degree aggravates the lungs of people with known bronchitis 1VINGS, HONEY POD PEAS 5.99. or emphysema, resulting in loss of time from work and even conttibuting to death. The main air pollution is the cigarette smoking habit and this is known as personal air pollution, It has been shown timé and time again that inhaled smoke from a cigarette does cause disease of both the upper and lower parts of the respiratory tract. Chronic bronchitis and em- physema are two serious lung conditions that are related to the cigarette 'habit. There is also evidence that smoking is also a definite factor in diseases of 'the heart, the arteries and the digestive tract (e.g. ulcers). It is impressive that in the United States over 100,000 doctors have given up smok- ing. At a medical meeting nowadays it is uncommon to see any doctors smoking. The physicians have been convine- ed by the scientific evidence' available regarding the- harm- ful effects of smoking. One: might ask -- why hasn't the general population appreciated this fact? ; Education of children, but also the population in general regarding the dangers of smok- ing must be emphasized.
