The training program will be extended to three weeks from the present two with 60 hours of .in-car training (compared with the present nine hours) and 60 hours of classroom instruction' (com- pared with the existing 40 hours). The program will be ad- ministered by the Ontario Motor League in seven cities --Toronto, Hamilton, London, Windsor, Ottawa, Sudbury & FARMS WANTED L REAL ESTATE LTO -REALTOR 985-7373 EMMERSON INSURANCE AGENCY LIMITED General Insurance Rs @ Septic Tanks "Cleaned By PUMP EQUIPMENT SEPTIC TANKS AND WEEPING Beds INSTALLED REG ARMSTRONG Port Perry -- 985.2226 * | tor FOTRGYIAGIIC TEE 3 OI IAL PR Ras 3 1] Thunder Bay. Previously, the course was administered by the Ontario. Safety League. A Department official said' the new regional system will enable more teachers to be- come driving instructors and, with 'seven training centres, will reduce the travelling costs for teachers. Transport Minister Irwin Haskett said that officials in his Department and the tea- chers who have taken the course "agreed for some time that there was a need to up- grade and expand this train- ing program for high school teachers who* volunteer for the important responsibility of instructing our young dri- vers on the proper attitudes and skills as motorists." Mr. Haskett said the 1969 Conference of Provincial Ministers responsible for mo- vehicle administration accepted the principle of a standardized t hree - week training program for teach. ers with 50 percent of "the time 'devoted to in-car in- struction. "The Ontario Safety Lea- gue, which has done a tre. mendous job over the years of arranging these courses, felt that it did not have the resources to administer an expanded program. The Ontario Motor Ledgue has kindly agreed to take on this! responsibility and offer the | program ona regional basis" the Minister said. The course was initiated by the University of Toronto in 1947. Administrative re-| sponsibility in courses was assumed by the Ontario Safe- ty League in 1955. The In- surance Bureau of Canada provides a financial grant to help defray the cost of the courses, In 1960, 36 high schools were offering driver - educa- tion for students. Today 475 of Ontario's 555 high schools are enrolled in the program, Last year 21,000 students graduated from the program and this year 26,000 are ex- pected to complete the course, . Unattended for a moment the .car rolled backwards into Lake Scugog at the foot of Queen Street. Brian's Supertest was called to the scene and the owner jumped into the water, hooked the cable on the car and it was safely, pulled back on shore. --Photo Joe Jordan DUFF ELECTRONICS ADMIRAL TELEVISION ¥ SALES and SERVICE Phone 985.7993 or 985-2728 PORT PERRY: For income Tax & Bookkeeping Services see ALEX SHEPHERD Room 2, Post ice Building Phone 985.7031 Specializing in business and farm operations. More than likely, however, it is tobacco advertising -- of the kind that equates smoking with adulthood, or with the so- cial graces, or even with viril- all qualities desired by the young. And as youngsters are potentially life- long customers, advertising takes dead aim at them. Such is the case generally in both developed and developing countries. Yet, to cite U, S. statistics alone over the last 15 years, chances of dying from lung cancer have been on the rise. * Mortality rates jumped from 18.4 per 100,000 population in 1951 to 39.1 in 1966 -- an in- crease of 113 per cent. Signifi- cantly, upward of 75 per cent of the most widespread lung form -- epidermoid cancer -- has been linked to smoking. Moreover, according to the American Cancer Society, of all the cancers, lung cancer takes the highest toll in male "PHONE 6404031 - Saves Lives scrutinize "measures ~ which have been taken to control the advertising of cigarettes, by re- striction . . . or by promotional material of appropriate warn- ings." That is also why the World Health Organization, and in the Americas its regional office, the Pan American Sanitary Bureau, this year launched a program to increase public understanding of cancer. Cancer is not a single dis- ease, but rather a family of diseases. Some forms are dif- ficult to diagnose, and conse- quently to treat. Others how- ever, more easily detected, are more easily treated and cured. Through chemotherapy, for instance, almost all skin can- cers are curable, as are breast cancers, through surgery. And the Pap test makes possible an almost 100 per cent cure- rate for uterine cancer, the No. 1 cause of all cancer deaths among U. S. women only 25 years ago. Indeed not only through drugs and surgery but also through radiology, physical ex- ams, and screening techniques, 'more than 50 per cent of all cancer patients could be cur- 'ed -- provided, WHO holds, the disease is detected early enough. a It is early detection, above all, that WHO is stressing dur- BOB'S CARPENTRY SPECIALIZING IN Recreation Rooms, Kitchens, Built-ins, etc. Courtesy, Imagination: & Estimates.
