Lawrence, Ontario Minister -of Mines, came to Uxbridge Secondary School last Thursday evening and the auditorium became a new battleground for the Uxbrid- ge Township gravel dispute. Mr. Lawrence first out- lined the Report of the Min. eral Resources Committee to the Minister of Mines. This Report recommends that the Ontario Department of Mines take over control of all open pit mining in the Province. If the government accepts the recommendations of the Report, Mr. Lawrence stress- ed the need for co-operation of municipalities. Relating to the actual oper- ation of pits and quarries, the government would regu- late the hours of work and control nuisance factors such as noise and vibration. Mr. Lawrence said municipal by- laws are "woefully enforced" as personnel and money are not available.
