PORT PERRY STAR -- Thursday, July 9, 1970 -- 19 HOT DAYS COSY MONEY - This year has been unusual in many parts of Ontario for really hot muggy days. It reminded me that heat has an ef- fect on animals ,and their feed consump- tion. Oppressive heat cuts the animals' appetites. It also makes it tougher to get as much grain from the same amount of feed as the animals would eat in cooler weather. Tests have shown that hogs that converted feed, under normal temperatures, at the rate of one pound of gain for every 3.5 lbs. of feed at 50 degrees fahrenheit, required 12 Ibs. of feed per pound of grain at 90 degrees. That is a significant change! And a costly one! Swine breeding efficiency is also af- fected by higher temperatures. Milk production of dairy cattle also suffers. Air conditioning is a nice thing for humans, but costly for animals. How- ever, ventilating fans that keep the air .moving in pens and barns will help considerably. And don't forget to provide lots of NZ h. water. 2A United Co-operatives FL of Ontario (UXBRIDGE BRANCH) Uxbridge 852-3321 Port Perry IE. 8-4130 IT MAY TAKE 4000 BOLTS TO HOLD A CAR TOGETHER 8Yr ONE "NUT" " CAN DISMANTLE R APPLIANCES SALES and SERVICE Repairs to all Makes of Appliances.
