He said OWRC could look into the possibility <of fetaining a part-time in- spector in the Village to. be present when sewer con- nections are being made. He added that the number of problem connections requiring alteration to. the has been few; Average cost for extra work on these connections has been around $200. Mr. Ray Dwinnell of Mitchell firm suggested that in future, if connection cannot be made without lowering the lateral "the pipes should be laid anyway, to connect above the basement floor." Both Councillors Hall and Jackman "objected strenuously to this, saying this would "only provide a half-baked system, or a substitute for septic tanks." Councillor Hall said that hom ers want to use their. basements for living 'areas, : and bathroom . facilities in the basement. "Mr. Toza agreed with the Councillors. He said the 'system should accommodate the « homeowner, and this « should be done even if the connection has to be 'made at the back of the house. With close to 400 in- stallations still to be com- pleted in the Village, those: present at the meeting agreed 'the guidelines for homeowners who do their own work should be strictly followed so that extra work and cost in the future can be kept to a minimum, Gov't approves manual for emergency measures + A new 'manual entitled "A Guide to Effective Planning for Peacetime Emergen- cies" has been given ap- proval by the office of the Attorney General. Report says road salt is pollutant A recent study initiated by the Ontario Water Resources Commision indicates that .centrates" of suspended solids, organic materials, phosphorous - chlorides and lead. George Kerr, Minister of the Environment - suggests 'that suitable land disposal sites be provided with facilities for trapping suspended solids, oil and other potential pollutants. The report also says that the use of salt on snow and 'ice-covered roads as a deicing agent can raise the chloride content in natural drainage systems when the snow melts in the spring. It is recommended that salt be applied selectively on main thoroughfares, intersections, and grades, and that only sand be used on residential streets. The Village of Port Perry uses a mixture of sand and salt on the roads in winter. However, Reeve Robert Kenny said that the amount of salt used is minimal because the Village does not -strive for bare surface roads in winter. He said the snow is ~ piled near the ball diamond site, and although possible to truck it to other sites, this would increase the cost. He .- added that materials in the snow are going to get into natural waterways when it melts in the spring, regar- dless of where the snow is dumped. they want,' the - --Morley -- Bruce; last (continued) Deputy-Reeve said she doubted that she would allow her name to stand for reeve, but would run again for deputy reeve, Arthur: Catton, who is a B and " present Cotincillor, received nominations for all: three positions on council, said simply that "if there is- to be an' election, I'll 'be around to see you."
