Durham College's Business Division has recently 'introduced an ef- fective reading course to diagnose reading problems "among first year students, and to provide individualized programs for those requiring assistance. Bruce Tuck, supervisor of the course emphasizes its benefit. 'Outside reading is most important so that "students may. complement what is learned from lec- tures with information from . other sources. However, most stsdents have only a very limited time available for such reading. With a good diagnosis, our Effective Reading . Course can help them to double their reading speed." Durham"s reading course supervisor relates the "problem he faces with students to a lack of preparation right back to the elementary schools. "We are trying to accomplish in three months what should have beendone over 12 years." He points out that the problem is not unique to Durham, but pertains to most colleges and universities. "Reading laboratories are becoming commonplace at -the. post- secondary level", he ex- plains. The Durham Business Division begins ffs reading program with a "diagnostic test which runs two hours to determine students' weaknesses and 'strengths. Then a program is developed on an individual basis for a. student's par- ticular: problem; Reading speed is in- creased by the use of 12 . controlled readers; obtained from Rutherford Audio- Visual in Toronto, a division of the McGraw - Hill Publishing Company.
